King subverts the whole Bozo/Ronald MacDonald comparison in chapter 2 anyway, with this line:

"The clown, Hagarty said, looked like a cross between Ronald McDonald and that old TV clown, Bozo — or so he thought at first. It was the wild tufts of orange hair that brought such comparisons to mind. But later consideration had caused him to think the clown really looked like neither."

Just noticed the trailer on youtube had 7 million hits, I think the film will do fine unless it's reviewed poorly.

Amazingly It entered the top 5 "most viewed online trailers in the first 24 hours"

The TV series got huge ratings when it first aired. I think there's a lot of fans of "IT". 1408 made over 132 million on a similar budget. I can't picture IT doing worse.
Umm..you haven't even finished the book yet? Perhaps,do so..just saying, the book has many layers, like an onion, and even two or four or five readings don't suffice to really understand. Not saying don't comment, but please,I would at least read the book before making real judgements..

I made it clear that my opinion was most likely ill informed and that I'd love for people to tell me where I'm wrong when it comes to the book. I'm far too excited for the movie coming out to stay away from conversation even if my opinions aren't based heavily on the book. It'll be awhile till i finish the book so no sense staying away. I'm not treating my opinions like facts and if i did that'd be different....

yeah, I'm basing most of what I know on the TV series version which I admit to liking a good deal but I enjoy hearing from people who actually know what they're talking about. People, put me in my place if need be, no hard feelings :)

Of course not..but you have to understand the tv series was pretty flawed and incomplete as pertains to the subject matter of the book..perhaps you prefer films to books? Nothing wrong with that, but there is so much detail in the book that didn't seem to get much more than passing views in the series..glad you are excited for the new movie and hope you enjoy it,I am thinking many of us longtime fans will, and keep posting and enjoy the SKMB..

I'm already enjoying the book far more, i
just happen to be very early into it. It's a shame they can't do a 3-part movie to cram as much detail as possible into them lol

I don't think IT changes that much if you change the time tbh (at least pre-social media). I might not be getting it of course as I am neither a child of the 50s or the 80s. I'd never change the time any of his novels are set, they are perfect but it does bring up thought food. If Stephen King was an upcoming writer now how different each novel would be.

You'd need a way to jam the cell phones in The Shining

The Stand's collapse would probably be way more public in the sense of people filming on the stuff going on. Also withdrawal from the technology

IT would probably use video games and phones and such things to terrify children. Calling up Bill with Georgie's voice or something

Carrie getting cyberbullied

Needful Things is a website as well as a store. An Amazon parody

NEVER SHOULD HAPPEN! Books are important the period they are written most of all in their original book form. It is very interesting consideration, though.

No chance of the seeing other "known" monsters in this film, considering the budget and rights issues. Being set in the 80s, it would have been a thrill to see the Losers being terrorised by the Alien xenomorph, Freddy and Jason.

Freddy is from New Line cinema which also put out this film, so there wouldn't have to be a rights issue. Hollywood studios often work together, so I'm sure likenesses can be arranged and bought.
The problem is you don't want monsters upstaging It and especially Freddy is highly charismatic. I hope there will be references to eighties film monsters throughout, or the story will lose some of its purpose for me. Sure, there are other cool things as well, but what is most dear to me is things like The Mummy chasing Ben on the ice. The nostalgia factor is what is most endearing to me, if it loses that it will lose a lot for me.

This film looks like it is going to be awesome. It is one of my favourite SK novels and I have been genuinely fearful of this film being crap, thanks in no small part to the initial reveal of Pennywise in the promo shots. I think they gave away far too much too quickly concerning Pennywise's image, and the design and actor choice did nothing for me initially. I've seen Bill Skarsgaard's work in Hemlock Grove, and while he isn't exactly annoying, he struck me as simply average and I would never have rated him as up to the job of Pennywise. I am so relieved that when in motion the actor is far more effective than the promo stills would imply. The key thing now is to ensure his voice is right, and crucially, that he can play the "innocuous" side to Pennywise properly (without that leering grin) - I agree with other posts on here that part of why Pennywise is so terrifying is that he doesn't instantly reveal himself or his intentions.
Other than that, I love the foreboding atmosphere, got no issue with the period setting change, and have every faith that the film will earn it's R rating! Just got to wait now...

...I've seen several references to Penny's "voice".....being in a business that relies a good bit on electronic processing, I will say that they could take his voice and completely re-do it in post-editing, just as certain singers are unrecognizable from studio to live versions of their work.....

Absolutely. I had to read the book again many years later to really get it.

If the movie delivers, then this early marketing buzz should translate into a significant gross. Not sure how it will do around the world, but I would assume the studio likes the overseas prospects. Any word on whether there will be an action figure line to go with the film? And how would people feel about spin-offs from the movie? Warner Bros. is doing well from spin-offs with The Conjuring universe.
