Maine
Hello KingCon 2018 folks! I'll preface this by saying I'm not sure if I should post this here or start a new thread, Mod?
I recently got funding for a very short research trip in Orono, Maine for my King course and an article I'm working on. Since this year's KingCon was in Maine I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for food/sights to see/good bookstores that they particularly loved during the 2018 gathering (it seems like everyone had a blast!). I'll be researching most of the day, but imagine I will have some downtime to get around a bit.
This is fine and you might get some ideas from previous posts.

Definitely Dysart’s truck stop (eat breakfast there) the standpipe, the barrens, the Pet Semetary cemetery, the Oriental Jade...
Also, get in touch with Robert Gray ! They moved to Maine because they are Stephen King fans and have a gorgeously renovated church that is now a home with a viewing room! He’d be happy to give you the fifty cent tour for free. There is the Derry Public Works building but tread lightly because it’s now a rehab house if sorts. The residents get cranky. Visit Gerald Winters store but maybe rake out a second mortgage if you plan to purchase anything there. Love Gerald and the store but it’s wayyyyy out of my budget!
Robert can give you context on everything.

You ROCK!!! Thank you, Nomik!!! All of your suggestions now written down.

This is fine and you might get some ideas from previous posts.

Excellent! Thank you!

...all that’s been mentioned and plenty of eateries all around...we were never disappointed....I would recommend the Cemetery where they filmed that dead pet flick and try to work in a trip to Arcadia National Park....

Hope this doesn't sound too lame but how about the library in Bangor? It was in the back of my mind to go there this past summer but I never did get around to it. Isn't that the library that the Kings contributed quite a substantial amount of money to? I'm thinking it must be beautiful. Good luck on your trip! (Is it coming up soon?)

Ohhhh, I LOVE libraries!!!! Thank you so much for suggesting it, Neesy! Added to my list. And yes, my research trip is coming up so soon! I'll be there October 29-November 1. Then I come back for less than 24 hours and head to Canada for a conference (first time traveling there, too!). So a week of exciting trips!

My wife Rachael and I would be happy to give some tours, insight, and have you come by to watch a King film in Derry. Just contact me privately when you will be around and we will work it out.

Thanks, Robert Gray! Private message sent.

Thanks again everyone for the suggestions. I made it and managed to get lost on my way from Portland to Bangor. Took an unexpected (thanks Google Maps!) 2 hour detour through rural Maine complete with, pitch black night, pouring rain, fog, and roller coster one lane roads. Suffice to say, that was an intense two hours. Definitely felt like something out of King novel. Maine really knows how to roll out the welcome mat for an authentic October experience ;) Outside of the 2 hour white-knuckle driving, Maine is absolutely gorgeous!!!!

....it is indeed picturesque, glad you made it safe-detour notwithstanding.....
