I last read The Stand two or more decades ago and recently revisited the novel. In the intervening years I barely remembered a dog being in quite a bit of the story. This time around I found I have a special fondness for the following Kojak moments:

Chapter 52
“That damn dog came back to me. I wish to Christ I hadn’t left him behind to come on his own, Stu. That makes me feel so friggin bad.”

Chapter 73
‘The black shadow wagged its tail and came. “Kojak?” It was. And there was something in his mouth, something he dropped at Stu’s feet. He sat down, tail thumping, waiting to be complimented. “Good dog,” Stu said in amazement. “Good dog!” Kojak had brought him a rabbit.’

‘Barking with joy, Kojak went again. In twenty minutes, he had brought back enough wood for a large fire.’

‘When the coals of the fire had burned down to embers, Kojak came over and slept next to him, giving Stu his heat. And that was how, on the first night after the party was broken, Stu ate when the others went hungry, and slept easy while their sleep was broken’

Chapter 72
'Then Kojak was bounding blithely past him, kicking up little puffs of dirt and sending down only small runnels of earth. A moment later he was standing on the bottom, wagging his tail and barking amiably up at Stu. “F***ing showoff dog,” Stu growled’

I had to smile at this last one as it reminds so much of walks with my own dog. She runs circles around hubby and me when we go hiking. Think she does 4 miles for every one of ours with all the back and forth.

Guess this reflects my evolution as a person and what has become more important to me in my later years. Somehow I have the feeling I’m not the only dog crazy one around here:)

lol... there are a bunch of us dog crazy people here. It's the best kind of crazy :) Those were wonderful Kojak moments. I think Kojak was one of SK's most endearing characters.

Nice pun for the thread title :) Loved the part where Kojak visits the abandoned Hemingford Home and his impressions upon sensing Flagg out in the cornfields. Something about him sensing a cold and ancient predatory thing like a crocodile in the fields. Not the warmest Kojak moment but a memorial part of The Stand for me.

Spoiler...

The scene with Kojak fighting off the wolves on Mother Abigails land. That scene made him one of my top 5 characters in that Masterpiece of a book.
It mentioned in the story, a little after he showed up in Boulder, that Kojak would live many years after the book. That helped me through the chapters where Stu and Tom and Kojak were fighting their way back to Boulder. He was the only one guaranteed to live through the adventure so it was a nice cushion to lie on when reading those tense chapters.
I'm brand new to these forums and don't know how to put the SPOILER tag on a post... Guessing the moderator does this?

Welcome Misery! You can do spoilers. When you type your post, a bar appears with all sorts of things and one of them is the three dots. Click that and the spoiler ability is in the list. You just hit that, it brings up a blank box where you can type a message like My Favorite Scene or whatever and hit continue. Then you type your spoiler between the brackets. [SPOILER bracket right here bracket /SPOILER] obviously the word bracket doesn't appear, I just did that to give you an example.
