So Prickly, consider this. Each publisher of each format needs to have something unique about its edition so as to attract cutomers. The publisher of the paperback includes the short story as a come-on. They know many SK fans already own the hardcover and/or ebook, so now the paperback must have something unique to it to get you to buy it. The publisher of the paperback may even have excusive rights to the short story for a certain amount of time making it impossible for the ebook to publish it for the foreseeable future.

Publishing is a business and the bottom line is to make money.

This makes little sense to me as, the vast majority of the time, the publisher of a book is the same across all platforms. And I have enough experience with ebooks to know that they are normally and routinely updated at the same time a new edition is published in paper format; the publisher does this as an automatic courtesy or, just as often (and in keeping with your "make money" statement), to advertise some new tie-in (as with the recent updates to CARRIE, to feature the 2013 movie poster cover, and THE SHINING, to include an excerpt from the then-upcoming DOCTOR SLEEP). It's just that, in this unusual case, the publisher is still inexplicably using the original file from when BLOCKADE BILLY became available in ebook form.

The ebook edition of a book is in no way an "automatic courtesy." It is a well thought out and negotiated business decision.

I did not say the ebook itself was, I said updates to the ebook file to correct for formatting errors, spelling errors, to add sneak peaks at upcoming books by the same author, to change covers to tie-in to related movie/TV adaptations, etc., were, and yes, normally, they're an automatic courtesy. I was offered four of them last month alone (though I've so far declined the one for UNDER THE DOME because I'm afraid they've updated it to the disagreeable Book 1 and Book 2 format the paper versions are currently using; I desperately wish that, when an ebook publisher offers a file update, Amazon would provide a brief description of exactly what's been updated/changed).
