Saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi this afternoon.

The nerds online need to calm down. It's not the "best" Star Wars movie, not by a long shot (that's still A New Hope). It's uneven, and The Force Awakens overall was a more entertaining film. But for all the shortcomings, there was one thing I wanted to see that the director delivered:

You don't mess with Luke Skywalker. Ever.

Was forcibly dragged to "The Greatest Showman" this weekend...ummmm.....well, if you like musicals, and I don't....and, if you like a LOT of Hugh Jackman....and I don't, and if you're interested in the history of the Barnum and Bailey circus set to music...and I'm not, this movie should be right up your alley. My fiance and her two year old son love musicals, my thirteen year old son and I do not so I took the hit and told him to save himself and stay home, I'm all about taking one for the team...lol I kept holding out hope that Hugh Jackman would suddenly sprout Adamantium knuckles and show everyone who was boss but alas, he just kept spinning his top hat and belting out songs, each just a bit more terrible than the last. I think maybe one of my eyes went blind at some point and I felt a distinctive slipping of the gears in my head during the opera performance..spoiler...there's opera music...yeah, you're welcome. I knew what was coming after the movie and I had prepared my brain not to respond when my fiance exclaimed upon our exit of the theater "You see, that wasn't as bad as you thought it would be, was it? Thank you for taking me."
.............................................................................."Yes ma'am. Anywhere you're at, that's where I want to be, babe." I managed not to clinch my teeth or bite my tongue in half when I said this but one of my eyes kept doing this weird tic thing as I said it...lol Went back home, watched John Wick 1 AND 2, which I received on blu-Ray for Christmas from my wonderful, musical movie loving fiance. I enjoyed every head shot, every shotgun blast to the chest and every line Keanu Reeves growled out before offing his next victim. I think at the end of the night it was a wash but I had forgotten how badly I dislike musicals...lol

You are a gem. One lucky lady!! May you never need to view another musical. (Born and raised in NYC- Broadway musicals were a must.)

I was amazed that someone could enjoy a musical so much. Her minor was theater/drama in college so I guess that's where that comes from. We actually had to sit thru a couple of musicals in high school together, Oklahoma and some other one. Here's to NEVER having to sit thru one again...but I'll probably have to...lol

Best of 2017:

1) The Killing of A Sacred Deer

My favourite film of the year, and possibly my favourite film I've had the pleasure of seeing on the big screen. I loved the cold, detached Kubrick-esque cinematography, the stilted and monotonous line delivery, and the choice of music was superb. The way the nail-biting tension and legitimate horror combined with uncomfortable black comedy put a big grin on my face when it was over.

2) Raw

A really engaging and quite beautiful coming-of-age story wrapped in the mythos of cannibalism. I'm gonna keep my eye on Julia Ducournau, if she keeps up this level of quality, she will go down as one of the horror greats (although calling Raw pure horror would be reductive). Special credit to Garance Marillier for what I thought was the best performance of the year, especially in one weirdly hypnotic scene in front of a mirror.

3) Dunkirk

I saw this the first time in 70mm on a big, big screen (not quite IMAX, but it was big) and came out of it sweating and shaking. A totally captivating experience, completely relentless, I think this is Nolan's magnum opus.

4) Blade Runner 2049

I haven't seen the original in quite a while, but I think this is one of the times a sequel absolutely surpasses the original. The film was gorgeous, the sound design was great, and I thought the relationship between K and Joi gave real emotional weight to the film's questions about what constitutes humanity.

Worst of 2017:

Downsizing

Decent first act, not-so-good second act, absolutely f*cking awful third act. I was kind of mesmerised watching it in the same way one is mesmerised watching a car crash. A floundering, aimless mess of a movie that occasionally manages to put forward interesting ideas, then dismisses them for the sake of a dumb joke (the Vietnamese refugee character, which struck me as a horrendously tone-deaf stereotype played for laughs) or a bit of "heart-warming" schmaltz (especially the conclusion, which was infuriatingly close to somewhat redeeming the movie, but decided at the last second to veer back into the realm of Hollywood convention).

Other Movies I've Seen Recently:

Inland Empire (2006)

My personal favourite David Lynch film is still Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, largely because of Sheryl Lee’s astounding performance, but I think there’s a good case to be made that this one is his best and most accomplished, based purely on how difficult it is to sit through. This was possibly the most consistently frightened I’ve been in a movie, so even though I adored its total antipathy towards the audience’s comfort, it’ll be a while before I see it again (meaning it sure as hell worked on me).

The Greasy Strangler (2016)

I was slightly disappointed by this one. I laughed a few times, but I was annoyed at how much it was trying to imitate the feel of an early John Waters movie, without the genuine danger and shock factor. Give it a miss, watch Desperate Living instead.

Enter The Void (2009)

I liked it a lot, but it was a bit too long and could have used a trim. The film was at its best when it went all in on the neon-drenched libertinism that Noe seemed to be revelling in.

Baby Driver

I enjoyed this one. It's a car chase/action movie and as far as the story goes, it's nothing all that special. What makes the movie good is the music and the stylish way it's shot. It's just a fun movie. Turn it up to 11.

One thing that I forgot to mention about Baby Driver is the Simon and Garfunkel song. When I first heard about the movie, I wondered if the song had anything to do with the movie title. The song Baby Driver is one of the lesser songs on the massively popular Bridge Over Troubled Water album. I always liked the song but with all of the massive hits on that album, Baby Driver is not one of the songs you think of when you mention that album. So anyway, if the song was going to be in the movie, I figured it would be in the opening credits. That didn't happen and I forgot about the song but when the closing credits started to roll, the song blasted over the closing credits.

Hi Cappy! Inland Empire instills a sense of dread throughout, doesn't it? I've watched it a few times and still can't quite make sense of what really is going on, but that Lynch for ya!
