But did the film do well at the box office? Were there a lot of people to see it?

We only ever had a film for a week. But the evening showings of this were pretty well-populated. I don't recall it playing one of the first-run theaters for long, if at all. Word tends to get out for a good film, even if it is a small one. Yes, even in the pre-film festival days.

It's hard to say why Carpenter's films often didn't do well in theatres. It's hard to imagine now that a classic film like The Thing flopped at the time it was released. It also was released in the year after E.T. and people wanted their aliens cuddly at the time apparently. Later Carpenter did his own 'friendly alien' film with Starman.

But his films are kind of small in scale and don't have big stars apart from Kurt Russell. Maybe that's why they tend to attract less attention from the audience at large, yet they are beloved by horror and sci-fi fans.

If you read Danse Macabre, you may remember SK mentioning mining for nuggets in films. The first I saw of AOP13 was when my manager grabbed me from the concession stand with, "You have to see this scene..." and shoved me inside the auditorium doors. It was the scene
where the little girl gets shot.
I was stunned and had such a visceral reaction. The rest of the movie is superb but that scene -- man! What a nugget!

The little girl in that scene was Kim Richards. She's the aunt of Paris and Nikki Hilton. Her sister played Lindsey Wallace in Halloween.

That scene originally earned the film an "X" rating. Carpenter tells the story about it in one of the DVD extras. Long story short the MPAA told him you can't show little kids getting shot and not get an X rating. He edited the scene out, re-screened it for the MPAA, and got his R rating. He then released the film with scene back in it. MPAAA never noticed.

What adds to the shock value of the scene is that she was known for Disney family films like Escape from Witch Mountain.

You do? That's great. I bet they add a lot of character to your room. Post a pic if you can.
Yes, I like his stuff, always have.
Took a pic and try to post it, my phone converted it to JPEG and it wouldn't post.. there are tons of pictures of the bronzes on the net, if you look up Trooper of the Plains, the Cheyenne, and the mountain man you'll have an idea what I have.. they're a bit pricey if you go through the Remington Museum, you can find the same ones on the net cheaper..

Cold Skin, starring Ray Stevenson.

Two men are stranded on an island and every night must battle against creatures that emerge from the sea. A beautifully shot film that is part Island of Dr Moreau, part I Am Legend, and a touch of HP Lovecraft. If any of those stories ever appealed to you, put this on your Must-Watch list. I get mad when wonderful genre films like these are overlooked by the big studio machinery, never seeing the light of day in cinemas.

I have my timer set for 0245 local time Assault on Precinct 13. I can just watch that movie over and over. I know it's been discussed quite a bit so I won't say too much about it agree with what everyone is saying. For me, when that soundtrack starts, a very simple tune that John Carpenter put together himself, I know I'm all set for the next hour or and a half or so..

In its simplicity I find it one of Carpenter's catchiest tunes. This one and the one for Escape from New York get stuck in my head more than the theme of Halloween.

My favourite scenes in the movie are early on with the gang members just driving around, aiming at random people, while this tune plays.

Currently watching all the Friday the 13th films. Don't ask why - I never saw the majority of them growing up, and have seen a few over the years (including the 2009 remake which I thought was pretty good). The mood just struck me. I watched the second one last night, and was surprised at how much better directed it was than the first. I didn't even realise that it's not until the third film that Jason gets his iconic mask. Cool beans.

DAMMIT! Was hoping they wouldn't destroy the franchise....alas.....not even worth watching?

Saw it at the weekend. It's not overly good but I went in with low expectations so didn't really mind it. The lasting impression of it is that it didn't need to be a Predator movie, and tbh while I know the intention was for it to spawn sequels and re-start the franchise, I honestly don't think it'll happen. Not off the back of this movie, and that means probably never.
Is Predators better? Well, I thought Preds was basically fan-fiction on film, while The Predator isn't. But it's a close-run thing. Very close. My gf actually said she thought the first AvP was better.

I think a review I read had it spot-on, by comparison with the original Predator: "I doubt anyone will be talking about this film in 31 years' time, or even remember it."

The main theme is a variation of Led Zeppelin's The Immigrant Song. Think of the main riff of that song slowed way down and played on a synth. Carpenter says as much in several interviews I've read / seen.
