Guardians of the Galaxy. We were rather disappointed by the movie, it was nowhere as good as The Avengers.

Am I the only person on Earth who doesn't really like the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies ? :question_pig:
Some are all right, but IMO they are quite forgettable and generic. I like superheroes, I like movies, just doesn't do it for me though.

I am not a big fan of Marvel movies, I have to watch all the Marvel movies only because my friend and my dad love them, but I like Iron Man and Thor movies, mostly because they are funny and they have great actors in it. But Guardians of the Galaxy was not so entertaining, not funny enough and unfortunately it has no message (yes, I like to see a message in movies;;D).

I kind of like Guardians of the Galaxy. However, just not going to say it was the best Marvel movie like a lot of people have toted..

I enjoy the Marvel movies. I like the actors. I like how they are all connected and a "universe." I think they're good fun. I liked GG, well, because it was a whole lot of fun. I guess for movies like that I don't take too seriously LOL. I'm just in it for the ride.

After Earth: At first I thought I would probably change the channel; I assumed a story to get bogged down in, with boring family drama crammed into a typical, pithy statement about universally unjust societal conditions. Before it was over I grieved that it had to end. I managed to be unaware that the main protagonist is Will Smith's actual son. I had more excuse not knowing it's a Will Smith "story" (I take this to mean that he came up with the basic idea, which includes emotional connection between a man and his son), but can't defend being ignorant that Shayamalan directed it. I felt Will Smith was great, and that his son, Jaden Smith, was really great.

It's a scifi story with visual effects which are gorgeous at times, and unusual: the film is reminiscent of the old scifis which featured dinosaur fights (I wondered why Hollywood hadn't thought of upgrading that lately). A lot of story detailing went into this (Shayamalan co-wrote the screenplay, btw), making it interesting-following. It has a couple of obvious flaws; a couple times the suspension of disbelief falters, such as that every night the Earth freezes, yet the next day the jungles are still as green as ever. But that's being a bit picky, imho. I liked the movie.

Jaws. AMC. I guess we wanted the popcorn. I had forgotten how many little things make the movie good. There's just clever little shots here and there and some nicely lined up cinematography. Spielberg has just a masterful eye for the right focus, for off-center shots, for things that accent the narrative.

It was cool to watch nearly 40 (?)(!) years later. A malfunctioning animatronic big gizmo, and the show still carries the heft for today.

Jaws is my favorite movie of all time :)

Quint's speech about the USS Indianapolis is haunting. Because it's true. He got the dates wrong but the facts were right. Someone should make a movie about that. And focus on the shameful way the Navy treated the captain of the Indy.

I like some of the Marvel movies.

I thought the first Blade movie was fantastic. I like Sam Raimi's first Spiderman film. The first Iron Man was pretty good. Not really interested in the whole X-men or Avengers thing.

I did like the Sam Raimi Spiderman films (1 and 2 at least), and the X-Men films were pretty good, but Iron Man,Thor etc I'm not fussed on.

The Great Gatsby (1974) - Robert Redford, Mia Farrow
The Great Gatsby (2013) - Leonardo DiCaprio

I read the novel (for the first time) and then watched both movies (the Redford version is available for streaming on netflix). I liked both movies and both were mostly faithful to the book but neither came anywhere close to capturing the greatness of the book and to be fair, I'm not sure that would even be possible.

In the 1974 version, Robert Redford looks like what I think the character should look like but he plays it much too wooden and doesn't give the Gatsby character as much complexity and depth as he should. I think Leo made a better Gatsby.

My main gripe with the 2013 version is the mixing of old and new. The movie is a period piece that takes place in the 20s and there is a loud modern soundtrack that is very distracting. This just isn't the kind of story that should have a loud aggressive soundtrack. This is the same director that did the Romeo and Juliet (with Leo) that was in a modern setting with a modern soundtrack but used dialog from the play. Either make it a period piece or make it a modern version. Also, I didn't like Tobey Maguire as Nick as much as Sam Waterson in the 1974 version.

But even with those complaints, I liked both versions. They were good, not great.
