Saw Hugo in my film class on Friday--haven't seen it since it came out in theaters. Such a charming and visually stunning film. Great story that highlights the magic and wonder of movies!

I read the book to my son a couple of months ago, and liked it even more than the movie. Might be a case of lightning striking once, because we couldn't get into his later books at all. We both really liked the mixture of story and pictures--reminded me quite a bit of Neil Gaiman.

I never read Neil Gaiman! May I ask if the book is enjoyable for all ages?
Would a 20-something like me like it? ;)
I do remember seeing the book at Target when the movie came out--I flipped through the pages and the pictures were so vivid! :)

I'm 47 and I liked it :) The characters are more fleshed out, and it was altogether good.

Just got back from seeing Jaws on the big-screen. Beautiful 35mm print :)

The drive in town was a bit like a scene out of Mad Max with all the swerving and avoiding moving trucks and double parked out of state morons! Today is the big move-in day for college students in Boston. Lucky for me, I can out accelerate and out maneuver everything short of a Porsche!

Anyhow, it was a sold out show! Surprised at how many of the audience still screamed and jumped at the scary parts. Great time!

Don't be scared. The movie was only inspired by a true story........

Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Don't let the fact that Great Whites can and do jump out of the water put you off........

Also Quint's story about the USS Indianapolis is 100% true. And the ship sinking is the least scary part about it. The Navy's actions afterwards and railroading of the Indianapolis captain are much more frightening and disturbing.

My dad took we three kids (9, 7, 4) without my mom knowing. Scared us to death (naturally-lol), but the worst was a week later when we went to Corpus Christi and none of us would get in the water. He was snagged then--we told everything HAHAHAHA!

Plus Scorsese is one of very few directors who understands how to use 3D as an artistic tool. Hugo is one of very few films where 3D truly adds something.

No reason to add this other than self-indulgence......

But neither of us (Grandma or I) can warm up to 3D yet. It makes us kinda sick, and I mean that literally. Grandma couldn't explain it, but I think I can - the focal planes are off in the translation from 2D to 3D. Rounded objects get flattened out, among other things.

It's going to bother some of us more than others. It bothers us, precious. We can'ts stands it.

DD#1 had that experience with the 'shaky cam' in The Hunger Games--made her sick to her stomach--and so did The Man in World War Z. Film trickery doesn't usually bother me; I just think 3-D is a waste of time. It muddies the colors and puts the shadows off, and that's a shame with good cinematography.
