Has anyone read this book? And what did you think of it? As this is a book i am considering reading at some point in the next year but it is very long and i have heard very mixed things about the book (partially due to translations as some people feel some translators were much better than others and due to the time period it was written). I am fine with long books BUT it would have to hold my interest. What do you think of this book?

I was surprised by how much I liked it. The only issue, for me, was pronouncing all the surnames. I have this problem a lot when reading books from other countries, most notably books with Chinese names. It's a very readable book though, and despite its bleakness it is a big juicy book. I want to read it again one day.

I have not read the whole book. Would like to someday. I took a year of French in college, and the whole second semester, we were handed chapters of this book in French, our assignment was to translate to English and be able to discuss the story. I tell you, that was effective! I enjoyed doing the translating and I enjoyed the story.
