I really can't get my head around why they are starting in the middle.

This explains it quite well: Another Character From Later Books Is Cast In DARK TOWER!

The first film will tell Jake's story from the first three books. That's very much how the trailer plays out. The trailer starts out from the perspective of our world, rather than Roland's. It's probably both an artistic choice and a way to condense the books as a whole. The first book leaves you with a lot of questions, the last chapter is quite puzzling - maybe not such a good idea if you want to build a franchise and want people to come back (people want to have some idea of where something is going) - plus eight books, comics, short stories, is a lot to film literally.

1: Which are you MOST excited for?
The Dark Tower

2: Which do you THINK will be the best?
Gerald's Game - my pick for dark horse surprise.

3: Which do you WANT to be best?
The Dark Tower

4: Which one do you THINK will crash and burn?
None - all solid stories with solid people behind the adaptations. I expect all of them to be at least good with a few grasping greatness.

1: Which are you MOST excited for?

IT. Although no one does creepy like Tim Curry, I like that the guy who is playing Pennywise is going for his own version of him. Besides that, CGI is mucho advanced now, so looking forward to seeing what they do with his spider form, among other things.

2: Which do you THINK will be the best?

Gerald's Game. It'll be really hard to mess it up, I think.

3: Which do you WANT to be best?

The Dark Tower. I've waited so long for it, I really hoped it would be amazing.

4: Which one do you THINK will crash and burn?

The Dark Tower. Given Hollywood's reputation for flubbing up great literature on the big screen, plus the director's snottiness so far, I'm not holding my breath...

I haven't heard any details on 1922 and I think Gerald's Game will be good but it's all about IT for me. I love the miniseries, I always will and Tim Curry will be my #1 Pennywise forever but this new movie looks to be much closer to the source material and I like the new look of Pennywise so I have high hopes. Time will tell.
Mr. Mercedes is also in the works for TV but that may be next year.
