Hello Mr. King

My name is Amina Choudry and I am a senior at Downers Grove South High School. Each year, we are given a choice of books and we have to read one over the summer. A librarian comes in and gives small summaries about each book. Out of all books, Joyland sounded the most interesting to me, so I decided to read it and it was a decision I won’t regret.

As soon as I started reading the book, I could not put it down! I finished it in less than 2 weeks. Mystery and crime fiction are some of my favorite genres so my interest was already pretty high before I started reading. The storyline was great and the way you expressed each character made it feel like I was in the book experiencing everything. Devin was my favorite character.

My favorite part was when he started working in Joyland and was told the story about the girl who got murdered in the funhouse. I got attached right away because I was looking forward to knowing who the killer was. When Devin and his team went into the funhouse and only Tom saw the ghost of the girl, I got the chills. Especially when I found out that Lane Hardy was the killer. You did so well of making the characters come to life, and you would just never expect certain things to happen.

Overall, this book is one of my favorites. I didn’t really enjoy reading but ever since I read this book, I became more interested and it was something I could not keep down. I want to thank you for writing such an amazing book. I was just wondering, are you considering writing a second book? Maybe a couple years later, showing where all the characters are now? I’m sure a lot of people would appreciate it and it would be interesting.

Again, I loved reading your book. Thank you for creating such a unique and interesting book. I would appreciate if you got back to me and emailed me back at the same email.

Thank you,

Amina Choudry

Dear Readers,

My name is Richie and I am a senior at Downers Grove South High School. I am writing this message in regards of the book I read over summer called Joyland. Every year DGS English class gives us at least one novel to read over the summer so students can maintain their reading level. This year I decided to read Joyland as my summer reading program.

I choose Joyland because I enjoy reading mystery books, particularly murder mystery books. I instantly liked the idea of people solving murder so I went to the library and picked up Joyland. The book was about 270 pages which took me a week to read. This was a good option because I like reading short books.

My favorite part of the book was when Devin found out who was the murderer. I instantly got the chills when he realizes that the murderer is one of the park employees. At this point I felt like this book was a perfect choice for my summer reading program. Also, I really enjoyed the part when Devin realized that he was the second child in the fortune teller's prediction. This made me feel like something is going to happen to him and I was excited to find out.

This was a terrific book to read. During the end I’ve wished the story to never end but unfortunately it did. The ending was enjoyable but left me wondering,
what if the girl’s ghost came back?
I know this will never happen but I hope Mr.King makes a sequel. One more question hovering over my mind is that, why did Mr.King set this novel in 1973?

Thank you readers for reading this message. I would appreciate If you put your input on this and tell me about it.

Thank you for your time,

Richie

Welcome! :watermelon:

And may I say your post is very well written. You give me hope for people of your generation. Also, as a lifelong reader of SK, Joyland is one of my favorites. Devin is my favorite character too. Keep on reading!

Hi Amina, and welcome. Glad you enjoyed the book. May I suggest that you might like The Colorado Kid by Stephen King.
Interesting choice - I need to go find this book - I think I mailed a copy of it to morgan a long time ago before I even had a chance to read it.

I am enjoying Haven (I am recording the 2014 season), at least :) [it is loosely based on The Colorado Kid]

Ooops - edit - sorry - think I actually sent her "Song of Susannah"
it's hard to keep track of these books!

Dear Mr. King,

My name is Breara Harris, and I am writing in regards of your book Joyland. As a senior in highschool we were assigned to read a book over the summer which was part of the English curriculum. My school required each student to read one novel from the list they gave us to choose from. This past summer I decided to read this novel because I ended up reading the back of the book seeing that it seemed interesting so I decided to read it to read the whole book.

After reading the back I just knew I had to go into the library and find it. It is very interesting to read a book that makes you want to know what's going to happened next. I decided to go into the library nearest by my home and checkout Joyland. Once I started reading your book I started to get into the book and the most interesting thing that caught my attention is trying to figure out why was Linda Gray was killed and just more information about her murder.

Although your books are good there is just one thing I didn't like about the book and that was how small the words was in the book and how small the book was. I don't really enjoy reading but when I do I usually like reading the bigger books for some reason. Overall reading novels like this is what makes people want too read books even more. I have had many people telling me that your books were good and it turned out that it really was. It would be very fun and exciting if you had decided to make a movie based on this book I promise it would be the hottest movie out unlike all the basic scary movies some other people are coming out with.

I personally do not like reading but reading your books made me want to read more than I usually would. You turned a boring project over the summer to a very interesting project over the summer. I literally finished your book within 4 days that's how good of a book you wrote. I really think no matter what you should continue to write your anonymous mystery books and maybe think about making a few movies based off your books.

Thank you,

Sincerely,

Breara Harris
