Anyone else see this? What were your thoughts on it, without being too political please.?

I personally loved it, and have watched it once in the theatre and 3 times online already. I just can't get it out of my head, what a brutal but touching story. Found Marcus Lattrel's book Lone Survivor ( of which the movie is based off of, sort of ) on HPB so I look forward to reading it soon. The film took a Hollywood turn but most of it is true, and really captures the intensity of the battle, will and courage from that day in June 2005. I was kind of stunned to figure out it happened on June 28th, since that's my birthday. I don't want to go into the synopsis just yet for spoiler reasons, but I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts.

One thing I don't think I can handle listening to though is folks thinking the movie was political propaganda. That just hits a nerve. It does not matter whether or not they should have ever been put in that situation, whether the mission or the war itself is " wrong " or " senseless ". The movie isn't about that, it's about a group of trained warriors who found themselves in a badly outnumbered, compromised situation, but they banded together as brothers and showed more courage and will then most of us ever probably thought possible. I can't even imagine pushing myself to that limit. So many people cannot see the movie for what it truly was, but have to look at it through the " they shouldn't have been in that situation in the first place " theory.

Can someone explain to me how to do spoiler tags? Thanks!

The book is gut-wrenching and sad but very good. The extremes the four SEALS go to in order to protect one another are almost super human. The book touches more on how much the four guys razz each other which, to me, makes the book even better. Luttrell is quite a bit taller and larger build than the other three SEALS in his unit so they make fun of him a lot for being slower climbing hills and such during the mission. The banter between all four of them makes the book. I get a lump in my throat thinking about the bravery SEALS exhibit on the missions they are sent on. I very much admire them and Lone Survivor will not disappoint you when you read it. Let me know how you like the book. I saw the movie and thought they did a good job for the most part, a bit "Hollywooded" up but that's to be expected.

The military always has a problem with communication. Admitting that you're not ready 24/7 is considered a failure.

I read the book when it first came out and it is great.. One of my favorites. Marcus Luttrell, the author, is in the movie. He was one of the guys at the picnic table at the beginning with sunglasses on.. For sure all those guys were extremely, extraordinarily brave..

Found the book at Walmart, man that was an amazing book. I loved the movie, really thought they did a great job with it, but when you read the book you understand exactly how things happened and what was true and what wasn't. There were times during the book where I had to look up for a minute in disbelief. Same with the movie. When I saw it in the theatre for the first time, that was the 1st movie I had seen in years where at parts, I seriously grimaced with my chin glued to my chest in disbelief.
A lot of people saw it in the wrong way, and missed the whole point. You can't help but wonder what you would do in that situation. And that choice that they had to make.. Most of us will never be faced with a decision of that magnitude. How anybody could ever read the book or watch the movie with a dry eye is beyond me. Good Lord, you talk about a powerful experience, WOW!

agreed.. I saw recently that Marcus had a meeting with Gulab, the word is that he is in extreme danger due to his helping Marcus in his time of need..I would think that if this country can afford 2 give asylum 2 so many illegal aliens, we could give Gulab and his family asylum..

It's on my to-watch list. Grandma gets too upset with movies like this, and for that matter, it'll be a tough one for me to watch anyway. We saw the backdrop on it on a 60 Minutes, and it's just an incredible story.

I would suggest reading the book ,grandpa if that is something you would like to do.. Because there is a lot of detail that is left out of the movie, obviously.. All these men were incredibly brave and what they went through is something I believe Americans should at least understand.. Also there is more to the story of gulab that you just can't get from the movie, and also how dedicated Marcus' family and friends were to him.. They really hung in and never gave up..

I agree with that, the book is definitely well worth a read. Things happened a bit different from the movie as well, so it was nice to learn the full truth to the story. I have a lot of teeth trouble, and after seeing the movie, I felt like a pansy! Obviously these men are trained to deal with things and take punishment that we can't even fully begin to imagine, but I couldn't get past feeling like an idiot over here moaning with a toothache when there are men out there who could get wounded by a bullet 10 times, pack it with dirt, get up and keep fighting.. I know it requires a certain person, and plenty of grueling training to do what they do and be able to deal with the tasks they are confronted with, but sitting there in a theatre with a massive toothache ( popcorn didn't help any ), I couldn't help feeling like an idiot.
It struck me too that much of it happened on June 28th, my birthday.

And for anyone who has seen the movie or read the book, or learned of the full story another way... What about Michael Murphy, the phone call, and the 2 words " Thank You "... Wow, I was sitting there pretty much numb after that part. Can't even find the right words now to describe that. Talk about a true hero!!! Completely blew me away.
