I was surprised by some of the negative reviews on amazon. It was a really wonderful tale. I loved all the characters and felt like the amusement park b/c my strange little home for awhile. And (spoiler alert)
I loved how Annie saved the day at the end.
The ghost really hung like a beautiful shadow over the book. To me it was a book written by an author at the top of his game, and masterful from beginning to end. A beaut.

I liked the descriptions of when he was in the big animal costume, how he really got into the 'groove' of it all.

He really does, not that I know a plumb on dang on thing about it, but his books are just so good that you want to know more and more and more.
...another writer that studied the "other world" qualities of carnival life. and wrote about it with a deft touch-is Dean Koontz....i.e. Twilight Eyes, The Funhouse, portions of the Odd Thomas series etc...

I couldn't believe all the negative things I've seen about this book, too. I hesitated reading it just because of that, and imagine how surprised I was when I finished the book and realized that I consider it to be among my top 10 SK books!

It hit me where I live, inside myself.
It was like biting into a small, bittersweet, exquisite chocolate that lingers on your tongue and keeps hitting on your tastebuds

Step into the SK time capsule and let yourself go, especially if 21 was A Long Time Ago (it was for me, and good riddance).

Oh, just forget about the rest of the world for a few hours and read it.:encouragement:

I'm just into a reread of Joyland and once again, I just can't help think that many of these characters, the situations and tone of the book would have been much better suited to a sequel of The Shining. After reading Joyland the first time and then Doctor Sleep, I was so, so disappointed in Doctor Sleep. Joyland is just about perfect in my opinion.

I really liked "Dr. Sleep", but Joyland was just about perfect to me. All the emotions and atmosphere. I felt like it was a story that would pretty much appeal to anyone, so yeah, I don't understand the negative reviews at all.

Nah but I did run some nice tips with Trixie The Show Turtle, think she had a watet sking act down Miami way before we hooked up...no seriously, I 'toured' with a turtle, Gopher Tortoise actually, and she brought in some decent dough, was quite the little earner, played a crowd like a 'bona fide agent' for watermelon and strawberries..hey she was much too classy, a 'prima donna' some might say, to work for just peanuts;)
