I watch a lot of commentaries for films on blu-ray/dvd. What I notice is that basically all of them use the word 'again' over and over. Some people do it constantly, others every now and then, but it comes up sooner or later.

What I'm wondering is, does it mean simply: 'As I've said before' or does it mean 'Once more with emphasis', like the speaker's reason to repeat it is because he feels it's really important?

And why is it so often used in commentaries especially? You don't read it in articles of movies in books and magazines. It comes up in interviews somertimes, but not nearly as often. It really is part of the way audio-commentaries are done.

Anyone any idea?

I didn't know the term 'crutch word' yet, but what I read about them, a point of using them is to emphasize or stress things, so I take it that's the main reason for using them in audiocommentaries?

This use of the word 'again' I never noticed before audio-commentaries. Another crutch word is 'like', I did noticed that a lot, but I think that absolutely has no meaning.

...."crutch words" as I define them are "go to" words when you have nothing better to say at the moment or are simply to lazy with your verbiage to come with anything better.....

I think on commentaries they are FORCED to say something, otherwise it isn't a commentary anymore. They can't just start watching the movie - when they do they reprimand themselves and say something again.

So, that explains the use of crutchwords. Why it's specifically 'again' I don't know. Maybe one of those cases where one person once started doing something and it becomes the norm? Like, for example, people say 'binge-watching' all the time.

It is like a reinforcement (or perhaps for emphasis):

- saying something like "I like apples" and again, I also like apple pie!

Yeah, the function of crutch words seems reinforcement - it's not simply a repetition as in 'as I've said before'.

'Again' comes up in every commentary and often also interviews nowadays. There's almost no-one who doesn't use it in commentaries.
