The world has moved on. "T'is a sad state when one has to make/schedule time to read rather than relax with a good book, sit back and escape into the story. We still make the time and read, but not for the lengths of time in years ago.

Agreed. I have to "make" time. I have to take it from something or someone else to be able to read as I wish. When I was in law school, my wife and I lived in a two-family home in Belmont, Massachusetts. We didn't have a tv. We listened to Sox games on WEEI or listened to the PBS station (we like classical music, car talk, etc.). But because of my school schedule, I had hours of time to just read. And I did. I was voracious. I blew through books at about a couple hundred pages a day. Sometimes more. When I worked at a firm downtown, I had a lot less time, though I could still read on the 73 bus to harvard square and on the metro subway between central station and harvard square. Now, I have to drive to work. And I have to manage a small business, and a load of demanding kids (like last night, when I wanted to read and instead had to work on my daughter's defrost in the car she uses). And I've been doing it since 2002. A lot slower reading pace. Depressing.

Have you tried audio books for your commuting time?

No. Although, true story, in late 1989, when I was driving from Idaho to Fort Knox, Kentucky for Armor Officer Basic Course, I read the first volume of the Gunslinger series. I'd prop it on the steering wheel while I drove. Because it was long, open highway (I-80 mostly), for hours and hours, I had no trouble doing it. When I drove back after the course, I listened to the Drawing of the Three on audio book because my mother made me promise never to read while driving again. That's the only audio book I've ever used.

Ahhh, so you were one of those! ;-D My commute to work is only about 20 minutes each way so I don't usually bother with audio books but they're great for longer trips especially if I upload them to my iPod so don't have to switch CDs while driving.

I "was" one of those. But my Mom made me promise. And I don't like to break a promise to my Mom. My drive now is short. Under five minutes house to office. Under ten to courthouse in my county where 95% of my court appearances are. Tomorrow I have to drive up to Adams County in the afternoon. That's a couple hours away. As far as I go for work. But that's pretty rare. I don't have an I-pod.

Audios wouldn't work for you for commuting, then.

Can you still listen to an audiobook while doing chores- like fixing that defrost in your daughter's car? In the warmer months I used to mow many hours each week and audiobooks were a great way to pass the time while mowing.

That's a good idea. I usually just think when I mow. We have an acre of lawn so it takes a while. Though I make the kids do it a lot now (when it isn't winter). But I have to say that I love books. I love how they look and feel. And reading is such a pleasure.

I will listen to an audio book if I am going to do some wall painting in my house.
