I was asking about meth on "Under the Dome" novel thread because meth is mentioned in the book as a kind of "apple of knowledge" , opening eyes to wonderful realms.
SK did drugs for whatever reasons (after publishing Carrie and having to cope with the fear of being an one-book author) , but I am not sure if he used meth.
Philip K Dick used meth to stay awake and write lots of short sci-fi stories during a period when he needed money from his writing.
PKD might have suffered the consequences later on in life and his life might have been shortened due to his drugs usage in his 20s and 30s.
PKD was insane. He fried his brains and was seeing pink beams.

What about Idaho ? Lots of meth labs there, too ? That place is dynamite ! :) Are Iowans bored to death and have to use meth to cheer up ?

This is a post from Iowa's Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI):
Warning Signs of Living Near a Lab
  • Strong odor of solvents
  • Residences with windows blacked out
  • Smell of anhydrous ammonia
  • Iodine or chemical stained bathroom or kitchen fixtures
  • Smell of starting fluid - ether
  • Renters who pay their landlords in cash
  • Rubber or plastic tubing
  • Increased activity, especially at night
  • Excessive trash
Common Meth Lab Supplies
  • Ephedrine or pseudoephedrine tablets
  • Plastic tubing
  • Mason jars
  • Propane tanks (sometimes spray-painted or burned, with bent or tampered valves)
  • Camp stove fuel
  • Empty pill bottles
  • Empty cans of toluene, alcohol or paint thinner
  • Anhydrous ammonia
  • Starter fluid (ether)
  • Glass containers
  • Coffee filters with red stains
  • Funnels
  • Rock salt, iodine
  • Lithium batteries
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Red Devil Lye or Drano
The most common chemicals used to start the meth-making process are over-the-counter cold and asthma medications. Typical brands include Sudafed, Revive and Mini-thins, which contain ephedrine or pseudoephedrine as decongestants or stimulants.
How to Recognize a Meth Lab
Meth labs may be set up at campgrounds, rest areas, rental homes, motel rooms, abandoned cars, garages, storage sheds, barns and vacant buildings.
A typical meth lab is a collection of chemical bottles, hoses and pressurized cylinders. The cylinders can take many forms, from modified propane tanks to fire extinguishers, scuba tanks and soda dispensers. The tanks contain anhydrous ammonia or hydrochloric acid—both highly poisonous and corrosive.
Labs are frequently abandoned and the potentially explosive and very toxic chemicals are left behind. Chemicals may also be burned or dumped in woods or along roads.
If You Suspect a Meth Lab....
Do not enter a site that you think may be used for cooking meth. Labs present extreme dangers from explosions and exposure to hazardous chemicals. Breathing the fumes and handling substances can cause injury and even death.
Drug labs are considered hazardous waste sites and should only be entered by trained and equipped professionals.
Never handle materials you suspect were used for making meth, such as contaminated glassware and needles. Skin contact can result in burns or poisoning. Handling items can also cause some of the chemicals to explode on contact with water or air.
Consider that when professionals respond to a drug lab, they do not enter the building until they have put on chemically resistant suits and boots, special gloves and respirators.
If you suspect a methamphetamine lab in your area contact your local law enforcement agency immediately.
Guidelines for Cleaning up Former Methamphetamine Labs

I remember seeing this guy on T.V who was under arrest by the cops and he was almost O.D on meth.

The cops asked what he was doing and all he kept saying was i'm searchin for the lord.

I felt bad for the guy because he was shaking badly as well so if meth makes you do that i don't get why anyone would do it

Not saying i'm innocent or havent done anything stupid before but if it nearly kills you whats the point.

Dear OP, I want to take the time to write to you to tell you something from my own life experience. When I was younger, I was always up to no good hanging out on the streets with unsavory characters. I did not use meth myself but I had friends who used meth as well as other street drugs. I must say that out of all the drugs I saw my friends use, meth was the bad boy right up there at the top. Sure, I saw friends get sick and/or lose it all ( money, jobs, good looks, health, friends, homes and their LIVES ) on cocaine and heroin, but meth is a special kind of animal. It destroys your life, is makes you into a stick thin, oozing ball of itchy pus filled sores and blisters, usually out causing crimes in the end. It causes your skin to lose elasticity and it makes you psychotic as well as highly addicted. It is also made out of very nasty chemicals and even making it is dangerous because meth labs explode.

In the usage of every drug, there is something that happens neurologically to the user. The drugs stimulate your brain to release it's own feel good chemicals...so my friend there's the good news>>> the drugs that make you think you feel good are only triggering your own natural feel good chemicals<<< so you can trigger them through exercise, healthy living, sports activity, lovemaking, yoga, and meditation also!

When you release your own feel good chemicals through the usage of drugs, you can also deplete them, which means you have almost no more feel good chemicals in you, which leads in to a bad downward spiral of needing to use more to keep the feeling going, and it's worse if it's addictive because no matter how bad it makes you feel you can't stop even if you are in pain and the pain only leads to more self medication!

If you want to use drugs to " unlock the magic inside " just know that the magic is already in you! Find another way! You don't have to use to be creative or see the magic in things. :)

So I am past page 750 and I have a question....

When Rennie talks to Barbie while he is in the cell and asks him what is it that he knows, Barbie replies that he knows about the meth lab....I don't recall reading that Brenda had told him at any time...Did he guess it himself???

Thanks for your input on this...

One of my best friends during my school years got hooked on meth right after graduation, and as an outsider looking in, it's terrible. She lost her husband, her kids, her house, her life, has been through literal hell, and none of us trust her anymore because she's stolen people's things to sell, taken money meant for her kids...yech. It's heartbreaking. So, no. Eff meth.

Twiggymarie is correct...I know this thread is years old but meth can and oft does take intelligent, sensitive, funny, talented folks and turn them into shells of former human beings. I honestly don't see why anyone would want to screw with drugs.

I don't think he did meth, from what I've heard it was cocaine that was his main problem. The good thing is his wife managed to get him off whatever he did.
