Carpenter, because he directed my numero uno favourite film "The Thing", and many others I like, including, off the top of my head, "Big Trouble in Little China", "Halloween" and "Assault on Precinct 13".

Little known fact: I actually have an altar in my bedroom dedicated to "The Thing". ;;D

Other directors I would put on my Top Directors list are: Quentin Tarantino, David Lynch, Alfred Hitchcock, Lucio Fulci, Paul Verhoeven, George Romero, George Miller, Lloyd Kaufman, Tobe Hooper and, of course, David Cronenberg.
If I could like this post more time I would sir. Have to give the nod to Carpenter. It took someone special to come up with that good of a remake of "The Thing". I was curious, did you catch the updated version they put out a couple of three years ago?

The new one is actually a prequel as it takes the viewer up to the point of the beginning of the Kurt Russell film. I liked it alot.

I've never got a chance to watch it. As much as I like Carpenter's version, I'm surprised I let this one slip by. I'll have to check it out.
Repeat after me: "Nothing will ever come close to John Carpenter's version of The Thing.' There, now you can go watch the other one and not be disappointed! ;-D

I agree. My son watched Carpenter's version last year around Halloween for the first time. He liked it a lot, didn't budge during the whole movie. It's still an intense movie.

Y'know, I get the "genius" thing applied to Kubrick. Just not my kind of genius, I guess.

I was enjoying 2001: A Space Odyssey but there was so little exposition that it made the movie indecipherable, which I guess is genius in letting the audience decide, but by that standard, you could show them a blank screen for two and a half hours and let them decide what movie they just saw.

It seemed like I spent three weeks watching Barry Lyndon, with a boring storing revolving around characters bereft of interest to me. That one was a slog, and not a slog to some ultimate triumph, but a slog through chest-high wastewater sludge with the reward at the end of a walk home with the same clothes I've been wearing through the miasma.
