My 2016 List

Most of the films I saw at the beginning of the year were films released in 2015.

2016 was a year that taught me more than any other year. I found out that, if you get injured on a job site, you should call a lawyer before you go to a doctor which is really stupid and sad. When you see the doctor you must always go and see a second doctor because chances are the first doctor misdiagnosed you. I saw Mr. Kings interview by George R.R. Martin in Ol’ New Mexico. King said he was worried about a sciatic nerve problem. That turn out not to be the problem. I feel his worries my disc torn and has been sticking out of my back (size of the tip of your pinky finger) since November 2015, pushing up against my sciatic nerve.

Like most I got my first brush with the big c. In a weird twist of fate, I got a British man and women flopping Tony jr back and forth for a good 20 minutes while holding a scalpel before they started filleting the skin.

In a good chance of luck, a week before my filleting I found a first edition of THE STAND at a community garage sale drive for suicide charity in Dilworth, MN.

Any-hoo, this is the first year I didn’t keep track of everything I watched. I had other things on my mind.

2016 also brought in a new dorf into the world.

My favorite films of 2016:

HELL OR HIGH WATER – This was my favorite film this year.

STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE – Awesome… I hope we get a KIGHTS OF REN standalone film.

THE NICE GUYS: Nothing better than a mash up of SHANE BLACK/ABBOTT AND COSTELLO/CHINATOWN so much fun wish this was a serial…

GREEN ROOM: Intense I can't wait to see what is next... BLUE RUIN is a treasure so was this.

KICKS: A new age urban story.

THE CONJURING 2: Nothing better than great thrills and chills in a great film.

THE SHALLOWS: It felt like a shark was gnawing off my finger nails to the bone…

KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS: My favorite kids film of the year. Wish the director would make a sequel…

GHOSTBUSTERS: I like this film a lot as my daughter did. Wish they hd had the originals hand off the baton but it is what it is.

NEWSROOM: I know I’m late to the party but, I really, really, really hope someone buys the rights and they continue NEWSROOM with the change in political climate. I wish this series was still on, phenomenal dialog.

SICARIO:

THE WITCH: This felt like my childhood being a scared kid going to different churches on Sundays while the mom became a crazy Mrs. Carmody. I tend to feel more and more, some of the worst people out there hide behind a religious belief, to make up for being such ****ty people. But there is the flip side there are people who really do care.

THE FRONTIER: A great under the radar Noir…

DEADPOOL – So funny gut bustig funny …

My birthday triple feature not just a double feature this year was FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM, THE PASSENGERS, & THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was one of my favorite films this year. I loved it. It to me, is J.K. Rowlings best written work to be on the big screen. I LOVED IT. On a side note my 9th grade English teacher Dale Neuschwander taught J.K. Rowlings in England as a student teacher abroad in 78’-79’ wand is even in the teacher’s name. It was a time machine of a film for me.

Now I like THE PASSENGERS, don’t get me wrong. I thought it was cool but the previews ruined this film for me. I came into the film, with my brain popping ideas left and right, thinking it was going to have all these plot twist. ***SPOILER I thought that JIM was going to be crazy at one point and be a hell of a turn as an actor for PRATT in some kind of SUNSHINE. When that didn’t happen I started thinking the previews had me thinking there was some kind of conspiracy with the crew, stations, and earth. Again another let down. ****I thought the big twist was going to be (and HOLLYWOOD or you the readers are going to steal this) that the ships are built to get humans off earth and that there is no other planet. Earths elite is just trying to thin out the herd by making mankind think there is a bunch of habitable planets so people will leave. But the twist is there isn’t and thousands/millions are sent off in death ships with no real destination to die. This allows Earth to sustain it eco system to feed and sustain life.**** But me going into the film with a different intent let me down a bit. I did like the film a lot.

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT captured the original in a bottle and added to the folklore/mythology. Loved it, One reason I don’t like main stream critics is because of this film, and others films they critique like THE THING….

The Biggest Let Down: SUICIDE SQUAD felt like Expendable then went into Ghostbusters… I like the film but it was a letdown. The Enchantress starts out as such an awesome villain and then it got turned into something that seems so out of place. Characters were all cool, thought everything was running smoothly then it turned on me.

13 Hours: I was surprised how much I like this film. Who knew the true story was going to be such a huge deal in during the elections.

Best Comedy Of the Year: BAD MOMS I drank a fifth of vodka and I laughed so hard I cried through the whole film. It was a bit therapeutic, needed a laugh about parenting.

Funniest short film of the year: ANYONE CAN QUANTUM http://www.aintitcool.com/node/74307

Best Documentary: MINNESOTA 13 close 2nd BRIGHT LIGHTS: Minnesota 13 takes place in the county I grew up in. I’m Irish, German/Norwegian, and Polish/Russian. When I was in 5th grade we had to do a family tree project so I had to interview both sides on my family. The Middendorf side I found out from my grandmother Loretta who was born in 1900 and died in 1998 that she would hang out, play cards, and cus with the incoming buyers. She said she drank with Al Capone and spit next to him just within a few miles of my house. She said Al Capone told her and my grandfather that Minnesota 13 was his drink of choice and the best in the lot that comes through Chicago. She said she only cus in German and that’s why the men didn’t mind. Her husband died when my dad was 13. He was a mean shine drunk she said. My dad is in his 60’s and still has nightmares of his dad crawling out of his grave to beat him. On the flip side of my family my Grandfather Jim (Irish) said his dad Joe who married my grandmother after both were widows/ers would run shine in his horse and buggy with a false door. Jim said seeing his dad pulling shine bottles out of the false door is the memory most engrained in his brain, ya. In case you missed it yes in a odd way my grandmother and father were also my great grandmother an father because of the shine trade in the 30’3 and 40’s, in a way. But any way what I got out of the family tree project I did in 4th grade is that most 1930’s gangster flicks about Al Capone get his favorite drink wrong. So I took the liberty to write my own ST. VALETINE DAY MASSACRE/THIEVES AMONG US/MCABE AND MRS. MILLER/MILLERS CROSSING/LAWLESS/DILINGER/BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFRADO GARCIA/ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA/PUBLIC ENEMIES/ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES/THE VALACHI PAPERS/ROAD TO PERDITION/DRUG WARS

Captain America 3: Civil War was brilliant. Loved the Spider Man and Black Panther… Kinda wished there would have been even more Marvel characters… One of my favorite of the whole Disney Marvel Films… IRON MAN 3 was maybe my favorite… Hard to judge it’s like a tv serial of films I hope it keeps going.

STEVE JOBS: Wow… Why’d the film have to end.

LEGEND: tell me if you have heard this one. A schizophrenic walks into a bar.

CREED: I cried through the whole film… Michael B. Jordan should have been nominated.

Southpaw: So good.. Jake is one of the greatest actor in our generation he’s so transcendent I still can’t believe the Oscars over looked NIGHTCRAWLER

IN the Heart of the Sea: Wish my 1 friend could have seen it.

Straight Outta Compton: So good… where were the Oscar’s? It’s the **** seeing the story behind the lyrics… Only reason this ain’t in my top is because of the Suge Knight beat down of Easy. If those people beat his arse why’d he just have a bloody nose a few hours later. Only thing that bugged me about the film. Took me away from the film.

THE HALLOW: One of my favorite horror films of the year. Creature feature with EVIL DEAD and DEAD ALIVE bleeding all over it… Be cool to see where the lumber goes and what it builds… I have a **** ton of ideas…. Also I can’t wait for CORIN HARDY ‘s THE CROW… I think he should take a crack at A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET…

DON’T BREATHE: I caught myself holding my own breath.

Ouija: Felt like the 90’s horror a mix of Scream, Final Destination, and A Nightmare On Elm Street… Hope for more I’m happy that Mike Flannegan is doing the sequel. Hopefully we can get an IT FOLLOWS sequel soon.

HUSH: I worked at Camp Courage the summer after I graduated. I even wanted to set Friday the 13th in a partial hearing camp 7 years ago.

BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT: I a big fan of the Barbershop series. This one was just as good.

TRIPLE 9: Love the atmosphere of a JOHN HILLCOAT film…

10 CLOVERFIELD LANE: I like the film I didn’t understand the hype…

BATMAN Vs. SUPERMAN: Dawn of Justice- Wished they would have just followed the comic/cartoon I loved Man Of Steel… It think the score was wrong in B vs S. like it was 2-3 different scores from 2-3 different composer and engineers. I Love to and do listen to Han Zimmer scores all the time. I Loved the score in Man of Steel, one of my all-time favorites.

THE 5th WAVE: My daughter loved this film, so I loved watching her love the film.

EVERLY: Selma Hayek and the Yakuza need I say more…

Kung FU PANDA 3:

JANE GOT A GUN: Suprised it didn’t get more hype. Good to great Western.

THE MAGNIFICENT 7: So good… Man ANTOINE FUQUA can make a great action western… Wished it had made more so we could get another chapter.

Jungle Book

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2: I like this film a lot wish they’d used Casey Jones mask more, that’s Casey jones I was also expecting Mel Gibson after a bar fight Mad Max audition Casey Jones. I think the box office suffered from release date.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE: Wish we could see the droid taking humans to his planet to train and build weapons. Maybe Emmerich will make another film using this concept.

JESSICA JONES Season 1:

MARCO POLO Season 2:

11.22.63 :

Coincidence

TV

STANGER THINGS:

SONS OF ANARCHY: Started to watch last week I’m on the 3rd season S3 E3 was a surprise. I tried to watch 6-7 years ago. But we had a guy at work who was trying to tell everyone he was in a biker gang and we were in a bar in Minot he kept telling everyone he was going to stab a rival gang member if they showed up. Next day he was telling me he was going to stab me and thaen that he didn’t need a knife to stab me through a seat. When it all can down to it he turned out to be a chump and liar. He was just trying to act and dress like TIG. So a few months later a guy gets a job where I work. He went in for transporting machine guns across ND and MN state lines. He got 10-15 years. I told him the story and he lifts up his shirt and said, “ I hate when people talk about doing stuff and never do, I hate being stabbed even more.” He had 10-20 stab marks a few from prison and some before. He said that he is part of the club and never heard of the guy and said if he was that they would kick him out for being *&*^ and not following through with his remarks.

X-FILES: My favorite of the series… Maybe because of the time machine the 6 part series created… Or that the answers were out there?

PEAKY BLINDERS Season 3:

DAREDEVIL Season 2: The Punisher was the ****… Thought the ending could have used a few more extras but the stair case scene was Daredevil at its finest.

SCREAM SEASON 1: Had me in the credits at Tracy Middendorf… Scream proves that a slasher in a tv format can be the perfect medium because even if you don’t like the characters at the start the writer get 7.5-10hrs to make the audience like the character that will later get offed. Because I didn’t like any of the characters except Daisy, Noah, and Audrey the rest were the type of people I couldn’t wait for and don’t like in real life. But as the story went on longer the more the things that pissed me off about the characters tended to be the thing that drew me into them. The trencher scene end of episode 7 and beginning of 8 is oddly familiar?

JESSICA JONES Season 1:

Can’t waits

FARGO Season 3: I read it takes place where I went to college after graduating and is in the county I grew up.

TRUE DETECTIVES Season 3:I hope we get another, I like Season 2

MARCO POLO Season 3:

K HjLL Sorry to hear about your health issues... I hope you're doing and feeling much better, wishing you a healthy 2017!
Thanks... I got some good scars from the c.. Looks like I got shot in the back through my tats and in the groin.... :) Disk will take a bit... But all in all it could be worse... We had our power go out a few weeks ago on the coldest day in Fargo -40 that night the temp in our house dropped 16 degrees in a hour. But we realized it could be worse, there's more people in the world suffering from hunger, no water, or shelter... I'd hate to be in those shoes not having a choice if anything 2016 was a huge slice of humble pie...

The cold lets you know you're alive... Like THE REVERNAT/EMPIRE STRIKES BACK moment coming out of the cavity... you might be okay and comfortable but you really don't know how good that was till the cold of the next day hits your cheeks...

I forgot the first 10-16 were my favorites of the year in order I guess if I had to rank them thou I usually don't my thing is to have a category for each like an awards show. Best of/most disappointed/best horror/best sci-fi. I just didn't keep track and it got to be a lot in a day... I'm going to keep up this year. Less of a mess maybe...
