Drove an hour out of my way today to go back to this shop, payday, cleaned out the rest of the collection.
The shopkeeper asked if I read the books, or just collect them, and he told me I should try other authors.
I do, sometimes!

The cheeky bugger! In situations like that, you ought to just go 'Oh, but I do!' then rattle off a list of names (even if you haven't read them, or read much by them), and follow that with 'And of course, Dostoevsky in the original Russian...you just get so much more meaning and nuance. A lot really gets lost in most translated versions, don't you think?'
There is a slight pitfall there in that the shopkeeper might actually speak Russian while you might not (and tbh it's a risk I've run because my Russian is extremely basic ;)), but by then you should have either shut them up or be on your way out of the door using the old 'Must dash. Lots more to do!' escape manoeuvre.

Yeah, I thought he was too. After all, I was the only customer in his store (books and magazines everyhere, every which way, the kind of place I like, you find hidden treasures) - handing over my hard-earned dough to him)! He gave me a Mo Hayder novel to try, Ritual, so that was kind of nice. Next time I will quote E M Foster to him as I leave 'only connect'!!

I did purchase Koko by Peter Straub, for a princely two dollars, he did not seem to notice that. Now I am sorting over my treasure, which one to reread first...asked if the guy had any Ira Levin novels, but he had not heard of him. Oh, If I owned a bookstore....there are not many good secondhand ones left here, due to the old internet of course.

He doesn't know who Ira Levin is? WHAT???? Maybe you should get a cheap paperback of Rosemary's Baby and give that to him and educate that man! ;-D

I know, I was really surprised. I told him how good Levin is, and that probably Rosemary's Baby and The Stepford Wives are the best, my favs, anyway, he did quizz me on which decade Levin published those titles, which I got right. Levin is awesome, to me, as every bit as King. Just wish he had written more. Not heard of Ira Levin, as a bookdealer, unreal!

hopefully! Still, I guess it's not a hanging offence, lol. I don't know that many modern writers, because frankly, I haven't enjoyed the ones I've tried...I prefer old school or retro writing. It's like with the movies that get made now..light junk...no depth. Shakespeare is being phased out of our schools...how sad is that!

Have you read any Thomas Tryon? His books The Other and Harvest Home are fantastic and are now considered classics in the genre.

Have you finished painting? What color did you paint? Did you do something new in the world of book shelf space? Just being nosy!
Yes, I finished painting my bedroom. Pure white. It's been the same green color for about 6 years and I needed a change. There's only one window in there (4' X 5') and even though it's large, the room needs more light. I have a skylight that I found on clearance at Lowe's about 4 years ago that I haven't had installed yet (waiting for my brother to decide to come visit/work here, wink-wink, as I don't know how to install one) so once that is finally put in it will be a lot brighter. I may go with an accent color on one of the walls just to break up the whiteness. By the way, does anyone else hate how these new paints smell? They smell more chemically to me than the old stuff.

Excellent choice! I've been thinking of doing bright white in our bedroom. A skylight would be great. We have one in the master bath right over my bathtub. I love it - most especially in the rain. You got anything to bribe your brother with? I have not noticed the smell of paint recently, and we're always painting something. What kind of finish did you get? Maybe I've just gotten used to the smell of paint. My Ogre and sisterwife are always doing some kind of DIY project.

I like to use flat latex in my bedrooms and usually the living room, and then semi gloss in the kitchen and baths.

I think we've been doing satin all over. What color accent wall are you thinking? I also like that rainy greengrayblue color. I can't decide, and I have to quit buying samples. I have a ridiculous number of sample cans. Do you know how many different grays there are in the world? And none of them worked. Ogre finally chose it for the bathroom. I don't like it but after my failed attempts, he'd had it.

Haven't really decided on an accent color. Already had a green, so maybe a blue, but I had a blue bedroom years ago. Maybe I'll try a red shade, but it's probably a hard color to paint over later?

Red is hard. And you have to get pink tinted primer. For some reason it soaks into the wall like crazy. But it is gorgeous.

I did a red shade accent wall. Didn't need any primer. It worked great. And I also used it on the sides of my pull out drawers in the kitchen.

Like this, only think dark brown with red pops on the sides.
