I had read this book before, years ago, but I just finished "1966 Hearts in Atlantis again and as I finished it, I had chills.

My father was killed in Vietnam during a Medevac rescue mission on July 1st, 1964 when I was almost 4 years old. I grew up as a kid in the 60s, went to college in the late 70's and was sheltered from everything that went on. Since then,I have sought information, lots of it and I have found it. It's taken 53 years of time and in fact, I was lazy in my start, because I was just a regular college kid, then a regular married guy with kids and then a regular business owner.
Reading this shook me, not like "Dispatches" did, but it shook me nonetheless with a lot of information, now in better context.

I am sorry for your loss. I was too young to go to Vietnam but I do remember the riots and protests and the arguments among the 'adults' around me at the time. It was a confusing time and a confusing war. If reading King's book shook you, then he succeeded in what he set out to do.

I am sorry for your loss. That was my generation, lost many classmates to the war.
Have you read Hearts in Suspension? An insight to SK years at university during that period of time.

That documentary was amazing. I did not learn much about Vietnam war, but it was soooo good. I learned an awful lot from that and it made me veiw the soldiers in a differ that light. They really are doing a job that is something I whould never do.

Welcome to the Board! Have you seen Ken Burns' latest documentary series on the Vietnam War? Highly recommended.[/QUOT
