So I finally read "Doctor Sleep". Beware of spoilers.

I actually read it back-to-back along with "The Shining" (2nd time for that one overall, and the first time since the mid-90s) just to see how it worked.

I was quite surprised how much of a sequel it is, in terms of its connections to the Overlook, and that it wasn't just a general continuation of the character. In some respects I felt that King tried a bit too hard to keep them a part of the same cloth, but nothing seemed too forced. Not to the point of awkwardness.

I found myself liking "Doctor Sleep" perhaps a bit more than "The Shining". The characters, Dan's arch, the circumstances....there was more lean protein. I had a hard time putting the book down.

And I couldn't believe none of the main characters died! That's a rarity for a major King novel. Usually when you start one of his books you automatically concede that someone or many someones will die, and a 50-50 chance that one of those someones is the main character. I want my money back!
