Just finished The Stand (Uncut) yesterday. This novel is truly an amazing piece of fiction. I could probably write endlessly about this book, but I'm going to share just a few thoughts.

First and foremost, I'm still in awe of the sheer size of this novel: length, scope, the huge cast of characters, all of it. It takes an extremely talented author to write a novel like The Stand and keep the reader totally engaged throughout. I don't think engaged is even the right word. I was completely immersed in King's post-apocalyptic world from start to finish. Sure, some parts were slower than others, but they never dragged on, and I always knew each part was integral to the overall story at hand. There are very few (if any) authors out there capable of writing a story like this. Most novels I equate with watching a movie. I get sucked in for 400 or so pages and move on to the next one. Reading The Stand felt like binge watching a series on Netflix. I couldn't wait to devour the next "episode."

Second, The Stand had some of the most memorable characters of any novel I've had the pleasure of reading. I don't just say that because they are so fresh in my mind, but the way others talk about these characters years after reading the novel is truly something. Stu, Frannie, Glen, Harold, Randall Flagg, the whole crew. I loved reading their back stories and seeing how each character changed throughout the novel.

I know the ending is quite controversial, and I can see both sides of the argument. I didn't love the God's Hand ending, but I thought it was acceptable. A bit abrupt maybe, but I can live with it.

I don't think this novel has completely sunk in for me yet. I feel like this is a novel that will stay with me for years to come. There are still so many SK novels I've yet to read, but up until now, The Green Mile was the only novel I still think about quite often, despite reading it many years ago. I know that's how the Stand will be for me. What a masterpiece.

Rating: 10/10
