I remember reading Tommyknockers when it first came out and dissmissing it because of the science fiction aspect. Seeing comments recently made me curious. After all I didn't like It for ages and a recent re read totally changed my mind. So I am now half way through Tommyknockers and having a had time putting it down. It's the story of the characters in the town. The slow build of atmosphere. It's like I am SO glad I picked it up again.:rapture:

The Tommyknockers is like a fine wine - improves with time.
The first. . three (four?) readings, I gobbled that book down.

This time round. . I wallowed in it, like a warm bath, with scented oils.

The relationship between Gard & Bobbi is real and sad.

It's a small-scale big novel - everyone & everything gets turned upside down by the law of unintended consequences.
Most people can relate to that, I hope.;)

The Tommyknockers was one book that I just didn't care for the first time I read it. For a writer who is know for creating some of the best characters in fiction, I just didn't give a rat's *ss about either of the main characters. Years later and I did a re-read of it, just to see if maybe I was the one with the problem. While I liked it better the second time, I still didn't feel a connection to either of them. I believe I've read somewhere that this book was meant to be a reflection on the 'Reagan years' of the 80's. Maybe that's why I didn't (and still don't) care for it all that much.

Isn't that the one where SK said he was deeply into substance abuse, and hardly remembers writing it? I agree that it wasn't one of his best, that one and Rose Madder just didn't appeal to me,at all..

I had a nightmare after reading Tommy Knockers last night. I am halfway in the book. I shouldn't have read it before going to sleep and the horrible clown from It was there too. I can't finish that book.
Welcome!
Please do what GNT says, stare down your fear and finish :)
My last re-read was actually a listen, I listened to the audiobook after I had surgery on my hand and was in horrible pain. I was able to block out a lot of the pain, because I got totally caught up in the story.

I loved The Tommyknockers. I love the weird, and whatever the story is it's weird to the weirdest, man. Yet, some CRs diss it. I can't afford to pay attention anyone's dislike of a sK work, because I know from experience that he, by being so flexible and coming from every which way, appeals to so many from every which way. I also avoid judging a book by it's cover or title. Fiction is rarely what one expects, and especially in sK's case.

For a LOONG time I dismissed Tommyknockers as too Sci Fi. Recently picked up a second hand paperback. I loved the whole build up of characters, the growing paranoia, the urgency. It may never be one of my favorites, but I have an appreciation I didn't have before.

Even though it is sort of like science fiction, to me that was quite appealing, as I like science fiction. Give it another go - you will be glad you did!
