I am currently re-reading The Stand. I started reading because, well, we are in a pandemic and I am a glutton for punishment. The more I got into the book however, I started to read as a writer. I have read Mr. King's 'On Writing' but now I am really picking up on the parts of the book that really make things work or come together. While in this state of hyper-noticing, I have also spotted Mr. King's nod to other literature and to the real world. He mentions Bilbo Baggins when talking about Frannie wandering through the door to her father's workshop. He refers to us as Constant Reader. A term coined by Dorothy Parker. My favourite so far? The character Alberta Edmonton who is a friend of Clara, Frannie's mother. As a Canadian I had a great laugh at that one!

So, I am curious fellow Constant Readers, what nods to literature or jokes or innuendo have you noticed? Not just in The Stand, but any of his books.

Welcome to the message board. Oh my gosh yes, I don't think I've ever read a SK story where I haven't at some point felt like he was having an inside joke with me over something. :biggrin2:
