Ever since I read "The Stand" last year I have wanted to visit Ogunquit, Maine. I am finally going to get to! My wife and I are going to Boston, Massachusetts in November to see Hamilton. We are also going to stay in Ogunquit for two nights. I am beyond excited :)
I had a great time driving up the Maine coast. I stopped in Kittery then took interstate to Wiscassett for lobster rolls and took the coast all the way to where the road turns to Bangor. Sounds like you guys will be busy. Have fun.

Maine still haunts my dreams. My late father owned a little farm outside of Portland in the outskirts of a town called Sanford for a few years when I was in grade school. I've always had asthma and severe allergies. But the woods were so beautiful (I can still see the trickling streams running through them) that I ventured out and explored, no matter what.

One of my most "memorable" childhood experiences happened in Maine. I attended a youth camp while I was visiting. There was a loudmouthed bully of a girl who had a pack of like-minded followers. I made the mistake of calling her a stupid cow (or something like that) under my breath - but not softly enough. I found myself getting my a$$ kicked behind the arts and crafts building by this lovely bunch of girls. But in their defense, I was from "away." ;-D My first black eye.

Sounds like a lovely trip! I hope you both have a great time - do you think most of the leaves will have dropped off by then? I heard Maine is gorgeous in the Fall.

I don't know how long its been since you were last in Sanford, but boy has it changed! At least the along the main road (Rt 109)! A college friend of mine's family had property on Mousam Lake, and we would get off at the Wells exit and travel through Sanford to get to Acton and the lake in the 1980's and early 90's. There were lost of closed stores, beautiful old Victorian homes that needed lot of attention, and it took about 20 minutes to get all the was through town. A few years back, I drove the same way through and .. there's a WalMart, there's a strip mall, and heavy, heavy traffic. It took almost 40 minutes to get to my friend's house! Since I was traveling on to Bangor after my visit, he showed me another way to get out of town!

I live in Portland Maine. I haven't been to Bangor to see King's house yet. I was thinking of attending school up there for an English degree. Thought it'd be pretty cool to go to school where the main character of Pet Semetary lived.

I can't wait to visit/stay in Ogunguit with my wife and kids someday. When I was young, probably from around age 7 to 14 my Dad and Stepmom and Stepbrothers would all go to Baxter State Park. I never realized back then how close I was to Mr. King all those years - even though I always somehow knew he was "The Maine Guy."
