Welcome to the Board!

How old is your step-son and more importantly, what is his maturity and reading level? What's good for one child at a certain age might not be for another.
He is almost 12 and probably reads on an 8th grade level. We just don't want him reading anything with any sexual content, etc. His grandmother has suggested Carrie, Cujo and It. I am not sure any of those are appropriate for his age-based on content. THANKS SO MUCH!

You can't go wrong with this one - I read it as an adult and enjoyed it too!

I also agree that "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" would be age appropriate as well as being a very good read :encouragement::reading:

Okay - you are right! If the child is a big fan of baseball, this one would definitely be appropriate!:thumbs_up:
I was thinking it may be a good book for her son to read. Yes it is about baseball. It is really small. I am thinking it's in the bizzare of bad dreams?
Even though it's about baseball, if I remember correctly,
it's a pretty bloody story with graphic violence and mayhem.
Might not be so great for a 12-year-old.

Hello!

My kids all started with Eyes of the Dragon, and most went straight to It after that. We've always had good lines of communication open about sex, though, and have talked through the parts that were concerning. My discretion is possibly different than yours, though.

Each kid is different, and a family's tolerance for sexual content varies. If you want no mention of sex at all, EoD could be out, too. There is a brief, but possibly eyebrow-raising (I know it surprised my daughter--I'd forgotten all about it), mention near the beginning of the book.

Keep in mind, Mr. King does not write children's books (with the possible exception of EoD). If you want squeaky (er) clean, you'd be better to suggest a middle grade writer (like Rick Riordan, Derek Landy, J.K. Rowling, Katherine Applegate, John Flanagan, etc.) and reserve Mr. King's books until whatever age you deem appropriate to deal with sexual topics.

There are people who will say, "Yes, but a kid will see it anyway, if they really want to," and they'd be right. I respect a parent's right to reserve a recommendation, though.
