Been awhile since I've checked in. Not sure where this topic belongs, but here goes. I've been on a horror movie bender for the last couple of weeks courtesy of Netflix and Amazon Prime. None are SK related - just some things that were recommended that I decided to check out. Most are little independents, but there are some good ones worth seeing if you like this kind of stuff. I've watched these titles (in no particular order):

1) The Invitation - watched this last night. Very effective.
2) The Transfiguration - nice take on the vampire story, reminded me of George Romero's Martin
3) Killing Ground - This one is soul crushing. For more hardcore fans of the genre.
4) The Devil's Candy - A little less disturbing, but not much
5) The Void - fun, 80s throwback flick. Reminded me a little of John Carpenter's The Thing.
6) The Blackcoat's Daughter - Also worth seeing, interesting structure.

Just throwing them out there...

Great recommendations!
I recently saw "Annihilation" in the theater. Although it's billed as sci-fi, it's really more sci-horror along the lines of "Alien" and "The Thing". Very creepy!
In that case I'm all over it. I think I'm going to give The Ritual a whirl on Netflix next. I've been hearing good things about it.

I liked that one. Good show! It's best before it reveals the monster, but even after it's not really bad.

Horror movies are my favorite--thanks for some recs of things I haven't seen yet! The only one I've seen that you mentioned is The Void.

I'm always looking for ones to check out. Be warned on Killing Ground though. It's some seriously dark Australian horror with a premise that's entirely too plausible. I wouldn't recommend it for everybody. If you like your horror movies bleak (like Texas Chainsaw Massacre bleak), then definitely have at it. Otherwise caution is advised.

The Void kinda worked, it was scary to a degree. But still I was disappointed by it, for the most part it's very Carpenter-like (The Thing mostly I remember), but then towards the end it feels more like Hellraiser. I think if you're gonna do a pastiche of some other director's work, why not stick with that director til the end...

It is possible of course that what reminded me of Hellraiser is not meant specifically as a homage to that film, but I recall reviews where Hellraiser was mentioned also. Maybe I should give the film a second look, but I think it was a bit overhyped by genre-critics, as its rating on IMDb is not that high also.

I mean ,look at the recommendations on this poster, you'd expect a masterpiece:

The Void (2016)

I thought it was fun and I think you're right about a Hellraiser influence there. However, I would rate it the least out of the films I listed above.

The Void was a mash up of Assault on Precinct 13, Prince of Darkness, The Thing, and Lovecraft and Derlrth’s The Lurker at the Threshold.

I liked it to a degree. It seems to be a bit self-important to me in spots.

I finished watching a horror called "Veronica" last night it's a Spanish film, I enjoyed it. The news were saying it was so scary people can't finish it but it really wasn't too bad. It didn't have to rely on jump scares which was a good change.

A co-worker of mine asked me if I'd seen this one yet. Sounds like it will need to go in my queue!

Veronica I liked a lot. Perhaps more for the family situation, the older girl taking care of her younger siblings (in horrorfilms it's usually parents with children), and the general atmosphere than for the story - I still don't really understand the connection to Viking symbols.

I also guessed correct which film they're watching on tv, even though I only seen it once. Granted, that's not so hard, because there aren't that many recognised Spanish horror-classics and usually clips shown from films within a film are from classics. It's Narciso Ibáñez Serrador's Who Can Kill a Child?

There's a really interesting dynamic in The Devil's Candy between a father and daughter characters that feels very real, so much that it really adds to the film in terms of raising the dramatic stakes.

Sunshine and Ex-Machine were directed by Alex Garland (The Annihilation Director) so he knows how it works.

Watched the Veronica Trailer....thats not for me.
Reminds me of "The Witch"
There was also the Rumor , people couldn`t finish it, because it it so hefty....i finished it after 30 Minutes because it was boring.

Martyrs is a really disturbing Flick

I've heard a lot about Martyrs but haven't seen it. I'm a little leery of those French movies after Haute Tension, which was so completely awesome at the onset, and then turned into a bit of a steaming pile at the end.

How does Veronica remind you of The Witch? Completely different films.
I loved The Witch. One of those films that when you first see it, it feels like it could become a true classic, but in the end I think it lacks a little the substance to become a true classic - it's a good mind-**** but also a little shallow. But the look and feel of it is very striking.

Martyrs had a great first half, but I remember the second half wasn't so good. But, yeah, it is disturbing.

"A Quiet Place" made a bundle at the box office. I've never completely understood Hollywood moving away from horror movies as theatrical releases. They seem to make a lot of money in comparison to relatively low budgets to make. So why aren't there more of them? On Netflix and pay-per-view there are a lot of foreign, independent, and lower budget horror flicks. Some are good but many are awful. It's the mid-level budget from major Hollywood studios that have gone dark on horror films. They seem to only want to make "epic" horror flicks with a big star and some absurd action plot instead of a simple horror movie. Audiences like scary movies. They make money.

Agreed. Horror movies don't require big star-power with high-priced salaries to make money. You can have a film with cast of unknowns that will still draw plenty of folks to the theater. There are many examples.

I can't wait to see A Quiet Place. All the reviews make it seem like my kind of movie. However, I felt the same way about It Comes at Night, which left me a bit unfulfilled.
