I came across SK's book, On Writing, at a garage sale recently. I almost laid it back down because SK's genre of writing is not one of my favorites & I felt the book may not hold much for me. However, I turned to a page & read a paragraph or two. I decided to pay the $1 for the book.
I am so glad, Mr. King, that you recovered from your accident to throw yourself into completing this book. It was such an inspiration!
I recently finished my 3rd fiction novel. It is a historic suspense/romance novel set in the 1700s, starting in Nova Scotia & ending up in Savannah, Georgia, during Georgia's infancy. During writing it, I had come to discover the futileness of trying to force characters onto a path of my choosing. When I faced "writer's block," I discovered it was not writer's block at all, but simply my characters rebelling at being pushed in a direction of which they had no desire to go. When I pulled back & waited on them patiently, they finally uncrossed their arms in defiance & began moving again. I simply had to follow them & record what happened.
I was taught to make a list of characters & write out their personalities, character, physical characteristics, etc. Then I was to outline a plot. I threw all that out the window in deference to simply following the characters & recording. It was such fun to write!
Feedback on the books has been more positive than I could have ever imagined.
Your book encouraged me that I am on the right road with my writing. I appreciate the effort and time it took you to write this book. Thank you from my heart!
