But why is it also misspelled on Under Debbie's Blue Umbrella?

Both places were lowbrow and preying on people's desperation, but in different ways. The job fair was created for the despondent and unemployed trying to provide for their families and the ultra-private website was designed for people who would do anything to maintain their anonymity. Just thoughts...

One thing I wondered throughout was
why Brady used the word "perk" instead of "perp". I was expecting that to be a major clue to his identity for Hodges or something. But it didn't even produce a tantrum out of Brady when Hodges told him he was using the wrong word. Was that just one of Brady's character flaws? Character as in what makes him tick, not character as in he is one. ;-D

Not a complaint though, just a curiosity. :)
When my dad was alive, he always pronounced K-Mart as K-Mark. Another friend used to say "Cripsy" for crispy. Just a quirk, I thought. Some people simply mis-pronounce certain things. As to the spelling of guaranteed, simply bad proofreading. I didn't even notice it myself.

Yes! Thank you, quirk is a much better word choice than my use of character flaw. :biggrin2: That's what it seems to be, just one of his quirks.

In your mirror.
Hi.

About "perk" rather than "perp". On page 36 Hodges sees Mr. Mercedes has used "perk"

"Because, for all his writing skill, Mr Mercedes thinks the word for criminal doer is perk."

He then goes on to explain how he, Hodges, used to think the guy throwing the ball in a baseball game, the thing you pour water out of and the framed objects used to decorate were all spelled the same. ( Pitcher, pitcher and PICTURE.)

(When I was young I couldn't hear the difference between sh and ch so you might hear me say I chared my candy while sitting on the shairs. Ha!)

Peace.

Aaaargh!!! And I really thought you would know Ms. Mod!
I would be so grateful if you could ask SK when you get a chance. Thank you!

Well, turns out I was right about thinking the editors thought it was intentional so didn't point it out. I asked Steve yesterday and he didn't realize it hadn't been caught with Spellcheck and confessed it's one of those words that he often spells wrong. I've been in touch with his editors at Scribner and it will most likely be fixed in future printings but possibly not until the paperback is released. Color all of us embarrassed!

"...one of those words he often spells wrong." That's so cute. I don't know why; it just is. I'll never look at the word guaranteed the same again.:apthy:

....please do not hurl things in my general direction, but this story rolled for me as if King were writing a Koontz tale....and I mean that as a compliment....I love both writers whole-heartedly...the plotting seemed Koontzian, but the writing was all Steve....it was a hell of a good read and one that I didn't have to over-think to get anything out of it...I just jumped in the saddle and held on...

Obvioulsy I am just kidding. I am a copywriter/proofreader by trade though and this really stuck out at me from the start. :D

The term for doing that kind of mis-pronunciation is called using a spoonerism. My little contribution .

That really made me laugh! Understandable, though-I will never learn to spell 'publicly' or 'necessary' right the first time.

BTW, it's misspelled in 11/22/63, too--I just passed it and laughed again (lol). We're all human *smiley*

A spoonerism is more a play on words, like "The Lord is a shoving leopard" instead of "The Lord is a loving shepherd". It occurs when two consonants or sounds are switched. Saying K-Mark for K-Mart is more of a malapropism, which is the use of an incorrect word in place of a word with a similar sound, resulting in a nonsensical, often humorous utterance.

But I mentioned it a couple of weeks ago when the UDBU site was linked in the letter to Hodges! And at that point Ms. Mod had gotten back to me to tell me it was exactly as it was in the book. ;;D

Ok, I'll share the check with you!

btw... I once "lost" a $1million check for SK.
