Just saw the movie this past weekend and loved it. Truth be told, it scared the bejesus out of me! I do have one question, however, that I hope someone here can shed some light on...The characters make a point of saying that Pennywise uses Derry's connected sewer system to move around town. Yet there are a few scenes that suggest he can basically just appear wherever he wants at any time. Surely he didn't use the sewer to invade a slide projector, right? I'm not trying to poke holes, just wondering if there was some sort of explanation that I missed or connection that I'm failing to see.

Also, this is unrelated, but did anybody else nearly lose bowel function when that creepy girl's voice coming from the sink told Beverly, "WE ALL FLOAT AND WE ALL CHANGE"? I know that voice effect has been used in many horror movies, but it gets me every time!

I guess Pennywise is magical and can appear anywhere It wants - he uses imagination and fear... It's been a while since I read the book but that is the impression I got

....no big mystery, he accessed the house via the sewer, then could move freely about however he chose......

The thing with a thousand faces, which we call Pennywise (or It) for short, haunts Derry. The haunt is specific and has layered meanings which are covered int he book. I can't address the movie 100% since some of that mythology is still unknown to us, but the creature does use the sewers to get around. There is a difference between the illusions it uses to screw with people and the physical manifestations it adopts to hunt and kill. I'd argue that the slideshow was just sick fun and games for It. I suspect it wasn't really there, not in a meaningful way. That is why it didn't really chase them far. The balloon that pops up in the back of a passing car would be the same kind of thing. In the book, the monster did this stuff all the time. I suspect this is just it translating to the film. Whenever there is a physical manifestation, i.e. something that can and means to kill, there is always a convenient sewer access nearby.
