I just realized when reading about his death, that he wrote the novel, Indignation which was made into a great movie (with Logan Lerman) a couple of years ago. Also, The Human Stain was another highly acclaimed movie based on a novel of his (I loved that one too). I'm going to have read those books. I've never read one of his novels (and I don't know how I've overlooked him).

He's also famous for Portnoy's Complaint and several other books that pertained to the eponymous protagonist.

CORRECTION: The protagonist that he frequently wrote about (and many said was a loose composite of the author) was Nathan Zuckerman, not Portnoy.
