I saw a news program about the shipping of fruits and vegetables once and it was very disturbing. They had the food at Central facilities where they were being sorted to be shipped elsewhere and the boxes were sitting on the ground in and around absolute filth, there's no way there couldn't be rats around the area among other nasty stuff..

I saw a news report about lettuce once and the heads of lettuce were being put in the plastic bags out in the field. The lettuce was picked and put directly into the bag for shipping. No rinsing or washing, just off the ground straight in the freight truck and to the store.

I'm a bit lazy in this regard - I like to buy the kits already made up (I hope they are safe to eat?)

Do not buy romaine lettuce and don’t use any that you may have in your refrigerator until there is more information on the source of contamination. Consumers should also check salad blends and mixes, and avoid those that contain romaine.

Frogs in there. Other things too. Found a spider. Big one. Still alive. Put it outside after much upset. Poor thing. It was in fridge. How cold it must have been though .. He is living a good life now, I hope.

Ugh.. Makes you wonder how many spider legs and other spider parts we have eaten over the years.. one thing I have read is that you should be careful with red grapes, because black widow spiders are attracted to them for some reason and often hide in the clusters, so they should be washed very thoroughly..

Thanks for the warning. I remember a few years ago when fresh spinach was removed from the produce shelves because of contamination. I think they discovered a wild hog had contaminated a field. There are so many wild hogs around here, I'm afraid to eat local produce :(

Most vegetables, other than lettuce, are cooked so contamination isn't an issue. I never think of fresh lettuce as something that could be unsafe.

This post made me smile :) It's something I would do. I hate to see any animal suffer.
