To me Duma Key is King's finest novel. It hit all the buttons. I re-read it every summer. Like I do books of the Travis McGee series and 'Tender is the Night'. With 'Duma', the Florida setting kind of unites my love of Stephen King and of John D. McDonald. I hope he'll eventually do more in that vein.

And as always, vibrant characters and details. I always feel like I'm living right along with everyone in the novel when I read King.
Yeah, I think this is the hallmark of a Stephen King reading experience: we don't read them, we live them. I know it may be hyperbole but it's got teeth to it, or I should say, "It has teef!" Do you ever get that book hangover when you begin thinking about a character's welfare a week after you've read the last page? I remember finishing books like Cujo and Pet Sematary and thinking about them for days.

I wouldn't call it a hangover. I'd call it the ghost of novels past. For me, they hang around for years, the way a memory of your best friend never seems to fade.

I do! They're like friends I keep meaning to call and check on. I was thinking about Rose Madder the other day. Another painting story.
