That was one of the first sitcoms where a woman held a position of authority and they reckon her character was inspirational in some woman becoming journalists. I used to watch that show all the time in the early 70's. Some shows age well and some don't . It's amazing to think that 50 years ago there was whole fleet of journalists who actually practiced the craft, now there is wire services and PR companies that write about 80% of news content in print and even online. Investigative journalism is pretty much dead.

Oprah said Mary's character was a huge influence on her life. She even thought about moving to Minneapolis for a job because that's where 'Mary' worked.
