Not a random thought... I think I just need to throw up. I beg your pardon.

Last Friday a student was acting up. She refused to stay on task, refused to let the teacher lecture, refused to work, insisted on acting out distracting the other students etc. The teacher tried to redirect her several times, I tried to redirect her several times. I had her come sit by my desk and try to read the material...finally I asked her to go outside the classroom. We walked around campus and we talked. Just giving her some time to settle down. No pressure. After a while, I asked her if we could go back into the classroom and stay quiet, if not work. She said, and I quote, "Ms. Freud, I'm not smart. I'm stupid." I am so happy I wasn't wearing my therapist hat at that time. I reacted. Naturally. I was appalled. I stopped dead in my tracks and looked at her. She stopped and looked back at me. I asked her, "Why would you say that?" "How could you ever think that you are not smart? That you are stupid? "

I thought about that woman-child all week-end.

My students come from all walks of life. If you think your life is cruddy, try to imagine being 11-18 years old dealing with poverty, being home-less, (Home-less. That's a huge one.) alcoholic, drug addicted parents, violence, hunger, sexual abuse, child abuse generally (There should NOT be *general child abuse*).

Monday I let everyone (administration, teachers, TA's ) know.

I'm very tired and tomorrow is another day.

I'm going to bed now and I pray. I pray a lot.

PEACE.
