I didn't think I would like it, as there were some negative reviews so I was not expecting much, but it turned out to be great!
I thought King books always got negative reviews.

Haven't you heard? He sells on his name. Guy could write a shopping list and it would make the best seller list. :biggrin-new: Couldn't help myself. That was the last review I remember reading about a King book. I don't even remember what book it was, but it cracked me up and I've never forgotten it. (It was before Thinner, I know that.)

or was it his laundry list? (I know that doesn't even make sense - what exactly IS a laundry list anyway!??)

This is a weird looking drawing, (different) :biggrin2:

Actually laundry makes sense....for an idiot writer.

That picture is really good. The artist should have signed it though. There are two artists (maybe more) I have liked their page on FB. I'm glad they sign their pictures because then if I share them! even if I have to load it on my computer and post on a forum,it shows who the artist is. Free advertising for them. :D

I rarely read one of his works that I absolutely do not like. There seems to always be some kind of factor in the stories that I like, always something. I don't remember much from CELL, although I did enjoy it a lot, as a horror/zombie/romero fan. I just finished Duma Key, so I think I'm going to re read CELL now since they are making a movie about it. I want to have it fresh in my mind. CELL I believe was the last King book I had read years ago, and then somehow got out of reading and just stopped.

I enjoyed the heck out of Needful Things & The Mist, both deserve a re read.

Just finished it today. Really liked it, although slightly dissatisfied at the ending on the final page. I did like the fact the book got right to the action right off the bat. That was one of the things I really liked about "The Regulators" too. The killing starts quickly... It does seem already sort of dated, though. I bet many more people have cell phones now than then. That book was finished almost 10 years ago.
I do think this would be a cool movie though. Short book, so they should be able to keep most of the stuff from the book in the movie.

One thing to keep in mind about critics. 9 times out of 10 they are frustrated or failed Artists, Writers, Actors, etc. Jealousy abounds when somebody has too much continued success. Case in point.

this story did not impress me. Can someone change my mind and convince me to re-read for a different view?
No. Read or re-read every other book by SK instead. They are all great, this one is simply the exception to the rule.

Cell, to me, seemed like an extrospective metaphor for what technology was doing to diminish humanity.
Now, that's a word you don't see used every day.

Not that I am a luddite in any way, au contraire, I think new technology is exciting. But it pains me to see how technology is turning - at risk of sounding melodramatic - people into slaves. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around?

Case in point: last week I saw a father pushing a pram with one hand, whilst (which is too often the case these days) texting on his iPhone with the other. This is sad enough; If you are out with your kid, then spend time with your kid, not your phone. But the horrible thing in this situation was that the dad was so intent on his text message that he stepped between two parked cars, right into traffic and in front of a running bus!

I (and probably the busdriver as well) nearly had a heart attack, but luckily the driver was NOT texting, and managed to stop in time.

This is unfortunately NOT an exception to a rule. I see examples of this behaviour, as do you - I am sure, every day.

Or, in the words of much more prolific character than I:
”Head's up - hands down!
Because I see everybody with their hands folded, bent over, in the middle of God knows WHAT!
Driving down the f**king street, and it's like...
The world's passing you by fellows. Ladies and gentlemen, the WORLD is passing you by, and...
F**king put your phone down just for a little while, and LIVE a little bit of it please.”

Welcome to the board! I too, read Cell when it was released, and I do feel it was lacking in the old King magic. I think I will do a reread soon though, to give it another chance.
Re reading it now a few pages at a time to fill the gap before I aqiure sleeping beauties for Christmas...gotta say I’m enjoying it in all its gory simplicity .
Does seem very dated now everyone has a mobile phone today
