This book sucked me in faster than any other King book I can remember. If you haven't read it, I believe there are about 5-10 pages before all hell literally breaks loose. I was hooked immediately.
Good point both Sunlight and Neil. This one really does sink it's hooks into you early, but the hectic pace at the beginning had to slow down, and it probably didn't recover from the slowdown. I wasn't crazy about the ending, but I didn't think it was bad. Probably not SK's best, but a bad SK novel is still better than a good novel by others :face:

It was a grossed out read, more so than many of his other books. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as Mr. King is the, um, king of the gross out.

I didn't think I would like it, as there were some negative reviews so I was not expecting much, but it turned out to be great!

This seemed like one of those written with the movie in mind books which are never great. Ironic since it is one of the few King books that hasn't been made into a movie - although I understand that is about to change. It was 9/11 meets Night of Living Dead. Ground that has been staked out by Romero and others. Interesting that King uses the term "walkers" in the book which is now used in the Walking Dead. Also makes several reference to "full dark" which became the title of one of his more recent books. I did like the ending.

I heard some bad things about it (bad reviews) but gave it a try anyway. It was pretty good, in my opinion. I look forward to the movie, as one of my heart throb actors (John Cusack) is in it!

I don't know what year the book came out, but I only read it in the last two years

I liked this book. It had been a while since I had read a King story so I really enjoyed coming back to familiar terrority. I enjoyed the idea of the cell signal turning the majority into zombies. One of my kids would sit in from of the tv with a lap top in her lap and a phone in her hand waiting for the inevitable text so she could pounce of the phone and text back immediately. Would drive me crazy!

Remember in Needful Things...the two warring factions concerning bingo? Or the people in Tommyknockers who all felt the pull? Save for that buck with the metal plate in his head?
And in Mist...remember how things developed in the super market...people assembled/listened to so-and-so. There's a line in the Bible...or not...but I recall one that says in the last days people will gather a large number of teachers to say what their itching ears long to hear. Surely that is a familiar sign...what say...every two years, four for sure. And in Cell...the same thing was happening...the same mind...hive-mind...hive-mentality. Does that help? :)

Cell it terrific. It moves quick, but not in the beginning. But that's what makes it great. He shows a panoramic view of the chaos. He wrote without restraint, let loose and set the mood. The POV is deep. So is the structure. Certain themes resonate throughout the story. The scenes are graphic and dynamic. And the best part, the ending is ironic. You weren't expecting it , were ya?

and who would this lovely lady be, then? (It is hard to type with a cat in your lap!) Maybe I should log off - my cat is looking for attention!

I've started rereading this book today. I haven't read it since it was first released in hardback, I'd completely forgotten how this book hits the ground running and keeps the pressure on. A great opening and I'm really enjoying it a second time. Back to reading :jammin:

liked the book immensely...thought, as i remember back, there was something i didn't quite like about the ending...but it held me in it's grip. it is a light, quick read.

someone mentioned they thought he might've written this one specifically for the movies (sorry if i'm misreading your quote)...i didn't feel that way at all: there are certain king books that read like they are a movie...the plot tight and quick, the characters drawn so clear, you 'get' them right off the bat..the motivations clear and precise, except where mystery is needed... the whole of the reading experience is like a swift, scary ride !!

this, for me, was one of those types of books...fond memories, indeed
