Which ever way you decide- keep in mind, the books are the books-- words as written. The movie is the movie--adaptation.
How you visualize a character in the books, may well be entirely different than how the movie will portray them.
Personally, I would read the books, take the journey. It is life changing.
When, if you go to the movie, sit back and enjoy the entertainment.

The movie appears to have nothing in common other than a few names.

Read the books. They are amazing.
See the movie if you can see it as completely separate and not at all related. (I don't expect that I will see it, but I'm not protesting it. I just do not think that I could watch it and not scream at the screen. :) )

READ THE BOOKS. I'm going to see this movie the way I should have seen the film The Shining when it first was released: as a totally separate entity that really has not much to do with the books, other than character names and possibly some scenes. I hope to not be disappointed this way like I was after I walked out of the theater after seeing The Shining. I was like 'WTH did I just see? They left out so much of the book!'. I do hope that I will be blown away by the story, actors, and special effects!!!!

Right. O.k. I will read the the gunslinger first. No way I am going to get all 8 of the books read by july

Here is an idea. Get all The DT books and read them, read them at your leisure, soak them in, enjoy every word. Do not worry about this "Movie" right now, or in july. Just read. Then when you have completed the journey, and are now able to look back on every single SK story you have read thus far and in the future with a whole new light go see the "Movie" and judge for yourself how well it was adapted, or not. Bright side is that by that time you should be able to watch it for free, or netflix or HBO or redbox, or whatever instead of spending the theater money.

I personally prefer not to see a movie that I plan on reading the book that said movie was based on. I like a "fresh" mind entering the book, I dont want to have a preconceived image of the person that was cast for the role in my head, I prefer to use my own imagination.

Either way do yourself a favor and get those books and read them. I cant imagine you regretting it.

Won't make much difference, since the movie is going to deviate quite a bit from the books. Remember, it is NOT telling the book series story. It's a different journey to the tower.

I like this mindset alot. In fact I think for those of us who have completed the journey it is really the only way to look at this film and not get completely upset. Without revealing any spoilers its honestly the only logical way to look at this movie.
