...and I enjoyed it more this time. Don't get me wrong I liked it the first time but considering this is one of King's most panned books I was a little surprised. Having recently gone through a (somewhat) major injury I can see where King got therapeutic value out of writing. Not only that it is thoughtful and creative. The memory warehouse and 'dreamcatcher' concept were very cool.

Thoughts?

This was only the 2nd SK-book I read...the first It. Bought this in hardcover when it came out, enjoyed the story, some hilarious lines in this one...something about the Evian-drinking, salad-eating Goths had reached their objective. That...colonel was a real hoot. Spent my time in service and he brought back some memories, believe me you. Had a friend who worked at the Pentagon, too...the Rafinburgh...we must die because we have known them, die, because they float down on mares of snow...the poet...anyway, he told me about some generals who prowled the passageways of the Pentagon...be afraid...be very afraid. :) I don't understand how some could not like this story. And...I enjoyed that theme that seems to be at work in more than a few SK-stories...an idea that manifests as a lockbox in the latest.

This one is in my bottom 5. I've read it twice (to make sure I wasn't unduly harsh with the first reading), and I still didn't care for it much. I think it might be the alien thing--three of my bottom 5 are the alien books. I guess they just are meh for me. I did like the *expletive deleted* weasels, though--they made me a little sick, but BOY was that some evocative writing!

That image of the first guy that turns up at the cabin, man alive I couldn't look at a toilet the same again for about 3 weeks.
Yeah those
**** Weasels
were definitely something else! Good ol' Stephen getting right into the human psyche!

skimom2, this is the second post of yours tonight that I totally agreed with! We must have similar taste.
I really don't care for the whole alien thing (which is kind of weird, because I was a huge X-Files fan - love me some Mulder and Sully...I mean, Scully).

My oldest is completely freaked out by alien related stuff--he loved UTD, but wasn't sure if he could stomach DREAMCATCHER--lol. He watched DARK SKIES and got nervous; I just felt worried about the parent's finances and sad for them at the end--lol

For me the real scares were the human ones and what we can do to one another. Eddie's traumatic injury (which I can relate to; IT WAS RED) and his introduction into his 'other life' inadvertently led to the real horror and
perse took advantage of it. In my opinion she was just an angry animal wanting to feed off human misery and anything that qualified she devoured. That was the true tragedy of the story. Who is at fault here? Who was the villain and who was the victim?
perhaps my interpretation is wrong and/or I missed something. This is just what I came away with by the end.

This is the ONE AND ONLY SK book I have never finished! I tried reading it 3 (!) times and cannot get through it. To me, it is just so formulaic and familiar that it does not even seem like a SK book to me; it is as if someone else wrote it.
I was in shock, after I read the first toilet scene. I thought, "Man, where is the King going with this---" Then at one point I started to relate to the five friends and their camaraderie, and from there it was easy sailing.

I like Dreamcatcher.I didn't mind the aliens and thats unusual for me. I think I liked the characters so much I didn't mind the alien aspect. Strangely I even liked the movie. I've re read it and liked it more.
I think I have to re-read this one, too. Loved it when I first read it, but from the posts here I can see that I have forgotten a lot.
I also loved the movie, which I understand a lot of people don't. I even found it on a list of worst movies ever, and was a little surprised.

I'm with you on this one - just re-read it too.
I didn't realize it had been seriously hammered (gave up reading SK crits , long ago - bleagh).

I would've loved a little more back story about the military but apart from that, I enjoyed it.
OK, it's not one of his greatest, but it's still got that keep reading me, keep reading me vibe.

I think the rectal home invasion was a tadge too off-putting for a lot of people.
But hey, we all have our bottom line.
Mine was the things in The Mist. . :facepalm_smiley:

Nice one Neesy!

Well spotted!
Nope, I didn't think about the pun for a New York minute - I was just trying to think of a 'nice' way to refer to the illegal intestinal occupants

I disliked the book a lot when I first read it, due to the reasons mentioned above. When I thought back on it all I could remember was the gross out fest in the first section of the book. Everything else was pretty much a blank. After a decade I gave it a 2nd chance. I did find it every bit as disgusting as I remembered but I got more out of it because of the rest of the story the background of the boys, etc. I wouldn't put it in the top half of SK stories but I did like it a little better the 2nd time around.

I especially liked the part about
The Duddits game and the description of how it was played really cracked me up
