Yes I know there is already a post about Dan Simmons but I wanted to make a specific post about this book because I think it needs to be talked about. This is one of those books that is in my honest opinion flawless, I can't think of any negative things to say about it. Melanie Fuller is one of the most terrifying monsters I've ever come across in any horror novel, she's right up there with Pennywise. The whole section with Melanie hiding out in what is essentially the ghetto is terrifying.

I want to Guillermo Del Toro adapt this into a trilogy of films; we already know he's a fan.

Carrion Comfort was the very first Novel of Simmons that I read. I ordered the hardback directly from Dark Harvest publishers after I had read a couple of his short stories way back in the day. It was the biggest book I had owned at the time size-wise- it's a huge book! I have re-read it a few times and always discover something new there. You are correct that Melanie Fuller is one of the most frightening characters ever put down on the page. Actually, all three of the 'monsters' are pretty scary! But, then again so is the movie guy- he's the human monster here. He's despicable. This novel is hard to categorize as it's all over the map- sci-fi, horror, thriller, love story, etc. On a side note- every time I get to see Dan Simmons at a signing I take my copy of Carrion Comfort with me and ask him to sign it (again!). So far there's 5 signatures along with a few drawings that he's done. The last time I took it he sat there and looked at the different signatures and said that when he dies the book would be worth a lot of money. I said that it wasn't my intention to sell it as it meant a lot to me. He was happy with that reply.

It's frightening how much Tony Harod is like Harvey Weinstein, maybe Ole' Harv is a mind vampire!

On a related note- this massive novel started out as a published short story. The editor (Ellen Datlow) of the magazine that it was published in told Dan Simmons that there was no way he could expand it into novel form as it was already a perfect short story with a beginning, middle and end. I guess he showed her, eh?

I have the short story in a collection of vampire short stories that I own but I haven't read it yet, maybe after i'm through with the reread of the novel.
