Kurben, I was wondering that a bit myself. I think on reflection he was very self aware of the Revs effect on him and on others. He also had his talks with the psychiatrists. Remember he had known the Rev longer that anyone. I actually had very little sympathy for the Rev. I think his faith must not have been very strong to have fallen away when his family died. I think his drug of choice was electricity. If he had not lost his family he probably would have continued to obssess over his experiments. He would have been driven one way or another to go further and further. The only time I felt sympathy for him was in giving the Bad Sermon.

I have to say I loved this book. I loved the feel of time passing. I loved the periods of normal interspersed with bits of weird. I know we've all ahd our share of King weird, creepy ans scary. I think this has one of the best major weird scenes. With woman who died from mad cow and what was seen. That left my head pounding in the best possible way. I'm going to hide this for a while so the re read is really fun.
His "falling away" had already begun, before the accident in which he lost his family. We are given a hint of this when during his conversation with Jamie in the workshop ay Jacobs' house. It's a very subtle one.

The faces making a claw is what I'm having a hard time visualizing- which is rarely a problem with King's writing.

Now that you've mentioned it, I'm having difficulty visualizing a claw comprised of faces too. Somehow (even after rereading), I imagined multiple spider-like legs emerging from Mother's cavernous mouth - each leg ending in claws clutching a tortured soul's face (like a tiger might grasp a skull in it's paw).

My reading comprehension skills are the pits lol

In Nightmare On Elm Street, which I watched this weekend, his entire trunk of his body is composed of the souls of dead children.
I'm telling you: I don't know why they made a newer version of NOES, b/c Robert Englund was and remains the creepiest, scariest monster ever put on a movie. All this time later and his acting still terrifies me.

...I've interviewed him, he's one hell of a nice guy-that knows how to scare the bejeezus out of ya...

But what's with the whiskey? Whose whiskey? Why is whiskey there?
Any thoughts on why there was whiskey in the car? Who was drinking it, Jacobs or his wife? Though that point hardly matters, really. What does matter I think is that the whiskey symbolizes unhappiness in the marriage. Maybe sK put it there as foreshadowing.

I've wondered if Englund's real life personality was more like Willie's (the character he played in V) than Kruger's. I fell in love with Willie and I was surprised Englund was able to play an evil character in NOES so easily. I think of Englund as this generation's Vincent Price :)

I've only recently started reading again and I had made a fantastic choice with this SK novel. My head was always wondering how this book would finish and what were the fate of the Rev and Jamie. *Spoiler alert*
I think by the end it was clear that Jamie was going to die at some point (after the novel had finished). Having a peep to the other side came at the price of early death. My question is why did it have to be Jamie to help the rev open the other side? Charles said to Jamie 'when I first met you I knew our destiny were intertwined'. (it makes me think that the rev kind of knew he was always going down a dark path)
Can anyone help me to understand why Jamie was the chosen one.

Overall, I liked the book but like many others I still will need couple of days to reflect the ending.

I might be reading too much into it, but I love the idea that Jamie was playing with toy soldiers when Jacobs first met him. Jamie basically became a toy soldier for Jacobs.

...possibly both Frank, as you may recall-Jacobs takes a few "snorts" later in the book as well to buck up his courage or to be "sociable"...

I thought the whiskey in the glove compartment was merely a rumor and was never proven. (???) I could be wrong.

...rumored, but small towns hide worse secrets...and I sorta extrapolated from the gist of what I read-since he was known to take a nip later in the story, that possibly it wasn't a new affectation...

Yes. My thinking is that Jacob's wife was unjustly accused of begin drunk and causing the accident (the crash causing the whiskey bottle to break), and that the whiskey had been Jacob's. That self-medication was not above him is exposed later.

...I had that same general take...the accident was simply fate being a cruel sumbitch....

Loved the book, it had me thinking for quite awhile once I finished.

Towards the end, Jamie states he thinks Con was the first "revival". After thinking for a bit, does anyone else think that Jacobs may have healed his wife of something prior to the start of the book, then she killed herself and their daughter in the car wreck?

Wow, that possibility had totally escaped me!
