When Roland and Eddie are talking to John Cullum, John mentions that he used to be a warder in a prison and starts to mention this nice guy he knew there, but Roland shushes him. What's all that about then?
I'm guessing it's something to do with Green Mile, but since I haven't read that yet(!) I'm clueless.

I'm trying really hard to remember the conversation... I keep feeling like it was either a time issue ("shhh"... and a roll of the fingers to indicate, 'hurry up'.) or he didn't want to put John (or themselves?) at risk, so the less information shared, the better.

old brain cells-- I think it might be in connection with Shawshank instead of Green Mile. Will need to ck in book for details.

9th Stanza, third whatever, section/chapter..."In the fifties, I spent ten miserable years as a guard at the Maine State Prison...but I met a hell of a nice man there named--" In this case, Roland puts the two remaining fingers of his right hand to his lips. Cullum nodded. p 241 in my usa paperback

What comes right after that, Walter? (I'm trying to remember/understand the context...)

Cullum closed one eye and appeared to calculate. “In the fifties, I spent ten miserable years as a guard at the Maine State Prison,” he said, “but I met a hell of a nice man there named—”

Roland shook his head and then put the two remaining fingers of his right hand to his lips. Cullum nodded.

“Well, I f’git what his name is, but he lives over in Vermont, and I’m sure I’ll remember it—maybe where he lives, too—by the time I get acrost the New Hampshire state line.”

Something about this speech struck Eddie as a little false, but he couldn’t put his finger on just why, and he decided in the end that he was just being paranoid. John Cullum was a straight arrow…wasn’t he? “May you do well,” he said, and gripped the old man’s hand. “Long days and pleasant nights.”

“Same to you boys,” Cullum said, and then shook with Roland. He held the gunslinger’s three-fingered right hand a moment longer. “Was it God saved my life back there, do ya think? When the bullets first started flyin?”

“Yar,” the gunslinger said. “If you like. And may he go with you now.”

“As for that old Ford of mine—”

“Either right here or somewhere nearby,” Eddie said. “You’ll find it, or someone else will. Don’t worry.”

Cullum grinned. “That’s pretty much what I was gonna tell you.”

“Vaya con Dios,” Eddie said.

Cullum grinned. “Goes back double, son. You want to watch out for those walk-ins.” He paused. “Some of em aren’t very nice. From all reports.”

Cullum put his truck in gear and drove away. Roland watched him go and said, “Dan-tete.”

Eddie nodded. Dan-tete. Little savior. It was as good a way to describe John Cullum—now as gone from their lives as the old people of River Crossing—as any other. And hewas gone, wasn’t he? Although there’d been something about the way he’d talked of his friend in Vermont…

Paranoia.

Simple paranoia.

Eddie put it out of his mind.

Hmmm.... (and now I think I need to know what comes right before  I'll fish my book out when I have more time a bit later)

Thank you, Spideyman. :biglove:

...I'm not sure what the reference was in regards too...still tickling the back of me brain pan after all this time...but I do believe it's a Shank nod, other than that-never could determine whom he was referring to or why old blue eyes shushed him...

I can't think of a Shawshank character who would be called a "hell of a nice guy" and lives in Vermont. We know where Red and Andy ended up, and besided a guard wouldn't be that close to a prisoner anyway. It's have to be another guard, and they were all a-holes. (Hmmm... so maybe Cullum's an a-hole, too; like calls to like, after all.)

...C.O.'s/Guards are VERY close to those they supervise....it's all part of the security....if the job is being done properly...

Hello all,

Just thought that I would state this even though this post is nearly a year and a half old, but did you ever stop to think that what John Cullum has absolutely nothing to do with any other King books? And, that he, Stephen King, is just laughing while you try and figure out which other book he may be trying to reference. No! SK is throwing a line with a hook but lacking bait altogether.

John Cullum lives in the Key World!! Stephen King does not write stories that take place in the key world aside from The Dark Tower 6 and 7. King writes stories that take place in the all of other infinite worlds that are a stringing along the beams of The Dark Tower. (Or, His universe.)

John Cullum is exactly what Roland calls him, Dan-Tete or Little Savior. Nothing more, nothing less. Now, what would John Cullum's initials just happen to be??? Yep... There you go.
