personal opinion-- others are different. Give one a try.I read Boy's Life based on a variety of recommendations but was so disappointed that I have yet to read another McCammon. Are his other works similar?
I have to say, I agree with you. I wasn't that taken in by that book. I've never read another McCammon since that I'm aware of. But, I own River of Souls, I think that's the name. I will give it a try but I understand it is part of a series but can be read as a standalone.I read Boy's Life based on a variety of recommendations but was so disappointed that I have yet to read another McCammon. While I am a huge McCammon fan, I never really thought that Boy's Life was his greatest achievement. I highly recommend either Swan Song, They Thirst and especially Mine.I have to say, I agree with you. I wasn't that taken in by that book. I've never read another McCammon since that I'm aware of. Someone else on here has said it before but I can't remember who, possibly Dana Jean - even Rick's 'voice' is different from book to book. But, for me, that makes him an even better novelist than most writers out there because he doesn't rely on any repeated themes or situations from book to book. Not saying that it is wrong to do so, as I love finding the Easter eggs in King's books, just that Rick's worlds that he writes about don't cross over and his use of language is different for each book.Just curious: why were you disappointed? Were you expecting horror? Because Boy's Life isn't horror, though Pocket did their best to promote it that way. Or did you not care for the writing itself? Or just the story?
One thing that can be said about McCammon's work: it's varied. Even his horror novels are different from each other, IMO. But he's done horror, suspense, thriller, coming-of-age, historical, mystery, chase, pulp....
Nope, wasn't me. I think I've only read that one book of his. But, the fact that he doesn't rely on repeated themes or situations, and his very "voice" changes from story to story would be fascinating and actually I think a plus. He would stay fresh and inventive and you could never go into his work expecting anything preconceived. I would love that.Someone else on here has said it before but I can't remember who, possibly Dana Jean - even Rick's 'voice' is different from book to book. All his books are different. Ones like Wolf's Hour, They Thirst are more straight forward, though extremely well written. Failing that, try Speaks The Nightbird. Truly excellent.I read Boy's Life based on a variety of recommendations but was so disappointed that I have yet to read another McCammon. Are his other works similar?
