He was a classy man by all accounts. I remember Anne Rice had originally hoped that Lestat would be played by Rutger Hauer in the film adaptation of Interview with the Vampire. He was actually her muse when she wrote the novel. She was disappointed that the role went to Tom Cruise, but she eventually resigned herself to the casting director's decision.

I think he's pretty much the best known actor from my country worldwide. I especially liked his eighties movies, like The Hitcher, Ladyhawke, Blade Runner etc.
Even though he played several vampires (in Buffy the Vampire Slayer the original movie, Salem's Lot remake), he played Van Helsing in Argento's Dracula 3D. Unfortunately this is just about the worst film by Argento.

I think his most menacing role was The Hitcher. This film really shocked me when I went to see it at the time. I don't think I'd seen up to that point such an intense film - at least not in the cinema. You'd expect a thriller to slowly build up, but he's in the car with the main character really early on, threatening to pierce his eyeballl.
It gives you this feeling of: if this is only the beginning, how bad will it get later on. I loved the film though.
