I've read all published novels by SK, all pretty much as they have been published. The only book I have yet to finish is Dreamcatcher, though I have attempted 3 separate times. I will some day read it through. That said, I can't remember ever feeling as disappointed with any of his books as I was with Doctor Sleep (especially this one!) and Revival. In my opinion, they are populated with poorly written characters and their story lines are a mess; there is no fluidity to the narrative. I was afraid SK was hitting his "phoning it in & end of career period" but then there was Joyland which to me is one of his best and the 2 Brady books so far which are solid reads. But as always, to each his own.

I think I would have liked Dr Sleep better if it was a stand-alone novel rather than a sequel. The next time I read it, I'm going to pretend it's a stand-alone novel and the character's names are just coincidently like the names in The Shining.

No, it is not. Even if this is the trick they pull to try and avoid complaints about how the film doesn't even remotely resemble the books, this isn't Roland's next cycle because Stephen King didn't write it. He may have given his encouragement, ideas, and even his blessing to make the film, but it isn't one of his books. At best this will be some sort of cinematic homage to the ideas he has created. That's about it. On a different note, when were the fans polarized? I recall one or two people not liking the ending, but that is true of every book. In my own, anecdotal experience as well as reading posts here, most Constant Readers feel it ended exactly as it should have ended. The ending was inevitable. Use of the word "polarized" which gets used and abused so much in the political world, seems to infer you think King's fans are split down the middle as love it or hate it. No.
Woah! No popcorn for you on opening day at the cinema, Mr. Angry Pants.:heheh:

Well if I had any plans to be there opening day... :D I'm not angry, just thorough. Many people seem to read emotions in where there is merely pragmatism. I won't go see it opening day. I won't go see it until the reviews are in, and I've heard from enough people I trust here on the Stephen King site to convince me it is worth the ticket. I don't consider that being a Debbie Downer. That is more or less my approach to every film, and 10x over films adapted from books I like.

This. Exactly.

King would be better to keep quiet about his involvement with this so called "Dark Tower" movie as it only shows that he really is that far out of touch with his fans. We gave him millions of dollars one book at a time and he repays his biggest fans with a movie that should be called "go **** yourself constant reader" Its really too bad as it could have ,and should have ,been an epic on par with the likes of avatar. Really, why not do a remake of cujo as a camel you dumb ****er.

I get that people are protective of stories they love, but... this is something that means a lot to the author. It means a great deal more to Stephen King than it ever will to any Constant Reader. I want this to work for his sake. I support this project with all of my best wishes. I'm going to see it the moment it hits the screen and buy out the concession stand, I'm not even going to sneak in snacks like I'd do any/every other time. I can't be sure I'm going to like the movie, but I can be sure I'll like supporting my favorite author's dream coming true.
To me this is like going to a home game. I always cheer for my team.
On the other hand if Stephen King was not behind this project or was being jacked around, I'd boycott every one.

I've learned to take a more relaxed attitude to films adapted from other sources. As much as I love SK's books, Hollywood is quite a different beast entirely, so I know going in that for them it's a property designed to make money and they will treat it as such because King's name, even after all these decades, still has marquee appeal. I'm interested in seeing it, plain and simple, and I don't bother with other people because they're not the ones paying for my ticket. If it's a mess, I blame the producers, not King. If it's not good, it doesn't diminish the books, cause I still got those.

That being said, I cannot understand how you say you're not going to "sneak in snacks" for this one. You totally SHOULD sneak in snacks. Stick it to The Man, yo!

Dang, I sure got schooled. I can't wait until somebody else doesn't like my opinion here so I can get their backstory too. The Internet is fun.

I think you are reading too much into it. Stick around, as another suggested, and I'm sure you will eventually see someone actually get schooled for something. What you and I had is a difference of opinion. You voiced yours; I disagreed with you. An exchange of ideas and beliefs is the entire point of a message board. As it happens, I agree with you on another point you made recently in a different post, i.e. that we will always have the books. They can never take those away from us. That doesn't mean I'm going to run right out and see every film adaptation of my favorite tomes. I just don't need all that visual set trying to worm its way into my own reading of the books. I'm not rooting for the movie to fail, I'm just not in a rush to go see it until I hear some good word of mouth. I also don't see movies as continuations of books, but rather as an homage. I also agree with you about sticking it to the Theater man. What they charge for concessions is downright criminal.

I have not been to a theater in ages and ages. It's too freaking expensive all the way around. I love the theater experience but I love the paying my rent and buying food and clothing experience more. Besides, I pay for cable TV and buy books like they are going out of style, that's all the entertainment I can justify to my budget.
Going to see this movie is something I plan on doing up right, no holds barred. Large buttered popcorn me man! While you're at it, Large soda and at least two kinds of candy me too. I ain't scairt of the man. He'll stick it to himself eventually, I don't have to deal with him.
No, no, no hot dogs though, if I had to eat those abominations to and of the flesh to support the movie, I'd wish Sai King well and stay home... and that's the truth.

You're entitled to your opinion and I've let this go this time so you could express it but am letting you know that future posts with this tone won't be posted.

I always make my own popcorn before entering the cinema , and smuggle the tasty treats in every available skin fold.

The hot dog is a bit trickier to hide. :blarf:
When they charge 27 dollars for two large popcorns and two large drinks (judging by my son's receipt!), then I don't blame you.

I used to love going to the movies. I loved everything about it, but they (The Man) made it far too expensive. I used to go at least once a week, and toward the end of my movie going days I started sneaking food and sodas in. Then it just got ridiculous. I couldn't get behind giving them any more of my hard earned cash.
But this movie is different to me. I can hardly wait. I've actually planned a party around it. My family and friends are going with me to see it, and then we are going to hang out and talk about what we thought of it afterward.
They, I'm sure, will be sneaking in food. That's the kind of friends and family I love.

Maybe I will take my son Josh and his fiancee Stephanie - they've never read the books but they might enjoy the movie.
