I just finished this book a few days ago. All I can say is wow. I love how Mr. King makes you fall in love with every character. I really couldn't put the book down. ( which sucked when I had to be up early the next day.)

I'm excited to start my next book. I don't know which one that will be but I hope I find a discussion buddy to talk to about these books.

Thanks for listening to me rant,

Jeff

This book was one of my first of Stephen's and it scared the crap out of me. And yes, the characters were amazing.

My first also, and I am re-reading it now after all these years. Still love it. Funny, I can really pick out the difference in his writing style after reading so many others. (He was so young!)

May I suggest The Shining? That was my second and scared me wayy more. Excellent read. (block the movie out, if you have seen it)

Welcome to the boards!

Just finished this one myself and thought it was amazing. Now it helps me understand father callahan in the Dt series as well. I was thinking a good sequal could be made from this one, what say ye?

So I have finally started reading this. When I wqas new)ish) to SK's work and asked for reccomedations here many many people said Salem's lot.

I have kind of been putting it off because it's a horror story and I don;t do horror stories. Only of course I was totally wrong. I am guessing it will become a tale of horror but as always it is a book rich in characters so well crafted you just get drawn in.

Anyway I can;t imagine it will take me long so which horror story which I won;t enjoy should I go for next?

If you don't like horror you might try The Dead Zone. I say go for it and read the scary stuff. Have you read The Shining?

Hmm, don't...like...horror......

Talisman, Green Mile, Different Seasons, Eyes of the Dragon, Firestarter, Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers, Colorado Kid, Blaze, 11/22/63....

Almost any novel has scary parts, and all of these have SOME element of horror, but none of these are truly what I would call THE HORROR GENRE. Perhaps the Breathing Method in Different Seasons is, and you could argue Firestarter, but I would call it fiction with supernatural elements.

Right absolutely loving it. If I thought I like Donald Callahan in the Dark Tower I love him in this. Is SK a catholic? If not he demonstrates a superb understanding of what it's like being one.

That was a rant? I loved 'Salem's Lot, couldn't believe it was only his second published novel. He wrote as if he'd been writing for decades.

Finished this yesterday and I have a daft question where I may have just missed the point, anyway

Barlow defeats Father Callahan and forces him to drink his blood. Why isn;t he turned into a Vampire and left to make good his escape on a bus to New York and eventually make his way on to Roland's world?
