It's probably just that "lost youth" thing that likes to rear up now and again, but yeah ... The Barrens. There was a brook that ran roughly parallel to some railroad tracks, with a pretty good forest on the other side, in my neighborhood where me and my friends would hang out and do kid stuff.

I think the best times I had there were by myself, though. Wonderful adventures upon which other people would have only intruded. It was the railroad tracks, I think. Those tracks went somewhere. I wasn't aware of it as a boy, but I guess it was the idea of those tracks going somewhere that helped my imagination go to all those places that -- ultimately -- brought me to where I am now.

Or not.

Who knows? :cool2:

Why am I not surprised? :D
Growing up, my Catholic grammar school held a carnival every fall. Rides, games of chance, spin art, etc. It was the highlight of the year for my friends and me. Maybe even more than Christmas. The carnival was so magical in all its gaudiness. To this day I still love to go to boardwalk amusement parks to recapture that feeling. I've been to Disney World twice in my life and I never need to go again.

I've also been to Disney twice and that's enough for me. Way too crowded and over-priced. I'm not sure where you're at but if you ever get a chance, there is an amusement park in Pennsylvania called Knoebels. It's the most fun place ever! It's like a giant carnival. Free to park, free admission, just pay for what rides you want to go on (reasonable rates). We go a few times every summer.

That looks fun. I'm in NJ. Thanks!

Yeah, I always loved our Catholic school carnival every year. It was the only time you were allowed to legally gamble for money in town. And they let us kids gamble, also. Everyone was equal in the eyes of the Lord when they had cash in hand. :)

...it just hit me today, that another place I would have liked to hang out is Bill Hapscomb's Texaco-sans Captain Trips o'coss...local, small town garages-in my opinion-have become the General Store of the present...a place for guys to hang out and act like the knuckle draggers we are...

Absolutely, that's one reason I chose Darnell's.
