Not sure if this has already been brought up, but in terms of the sign-the-new-book rule, what about returns? Say someone buys a new book, and gets another book signed, there's no real way to stop someone from returning the new book (there really isn't). Granted, a store could play the odds, and perhaps statistically returns would be low, but usually when someone sets up a rule like this it is done because of the qualitative logic of the rule itself, not the statistical reality of it (I'm guessing, anyway).

Plus, I would think the idea would be that the new book is actually in the hands of buyers. The hope is the buyers will read the book and enjoy it. Generate word of mouth. And then watch/read whatever derivative projects come of it (book sequel, streaming series, comic book adaptation, etc.).

However, please understand, I do sympathize. I understand why someone would want another book signed. Also, if I don't understand something about the situation that would make my reply illogical relative to the parameters in place, please forgive.
Good point about the return if the store's policies allow it.

I suppose in theory people can always return their purchase at any book store depending upon their refund policy, but I'm not sure that is any greater concern for a book signing. In fact, probably a lot less at an event like this. If most folks bother to travel to these events as many do, stand in line sometimes for hours to get the book signed etc, they are likely fans to begin with and will read the new book etc. But like I said before the new/old book is not a factor in a "pre-signed" tour like the current one.

I heard there are hints that King might attend the Savannah Book festival next year like he did a couple years ago, though. The last time that was a buy the new book, get any one book signed event that worked fine. I assume it is too early for confirmation but hopefully that is the case.

Once again, please adjust if necessary ;-D

Is anyone going to try to go to one of these stops?

I'll be making my first trip to NYC at the end of Sept. Which happens to be the first stop so I might try to go. Probably unlikely but I'll wait for the details to emerge.

Marsha, I'm just curious, is there a reason why he won't sign in Bangor anymore? I can't remember the last time. Briar Patch for Tom Gordon maybe?

I will see you in Newton Centre! (Just got tickets!)
:jammin:
Me too! I have my tickets in a safe place. Maybe I'll see you there!

People would bring their own book if they wanted a different book signed. They would still have to buy the new book from the store to get a ticket as they are already required to do (i.e. buy the new book, get any one book signed). So there would be nothing extra for the store to stock. They would also sell the same number of new books which makes the store, publisher, and King happy. And King would sign exactly the same number of books. The ONLY difference in the process is that the customer could decide which one book they wanted signed. Many would stick with the new book but some might prefer an opportunity to get another book signed.

Diana Gabaldon did this kind of thing when I saw her speak in Phoenix: you purchased a presigned book, and she would personally sign up to two others. The problem therein was as follows: it took forever! She spent quite a bit of time chatting with every fan and personally incscribing books. If you weren't lucky enough to be first in line, you were there forever! Diana had already spoken for almost two hours, then she chatted with fans during the signing for another two. If Steve did this, he would be there for days. I was under the impression that the copies we are getting will be pre-signed. Am I wrong? Will there be an opportunity to actually meet him and have him personally inscribe my book?

It looks like this is not going to be a meet and greet the authors events. There are going to be 400 pre-signed books that will be randomly inserted into stacks of books (probably over 1,000 to 2,000) that will be on tables for those attending to grab off of the tables. It's a luck of the draw thing here. You won't be guaranteed a signed book- if you get one then it's your lucky day. Gone are the days where Steve could sit at a table, meet with fans and sign books, he's just too popular an author. Unless it's a special signing event at a small independent book store like he sometimes does in Maine and Florida- then you might actually get to say 'Hi!' and get a book signed especially to you. Steve's done events in the past where he sat at a table for hours to sign books and afterwards Tabby (his wife) had to feed him as he couldn't hold his own fork because his hand was cramping.

That's what I thought, although I didn't realize that the presigned ones would be randomized (I kind of thought they would all be signed). I guess that would be far too many for him to sign!

Not on this book tour which is a pre-signed, random luck event. Occasionally King does a book festival though and he has signed books at those events. They limit it to a specific number and strictly one per person to keep it manageable. It can be done!

The 400 pre-signed copies will be distributed at random to the attendees. I don't have the seating capacity but it will be more than 400 so not everyone will get a book. Just want to make sure you understand that going in.

Appears PORTLAND tickets sold very quickly... possibly SOLD OUT H
However noticed major VIVId ticket reseller has about 50 or so up for sale with some selling at as much as 15 times the original price... They seem to have tickets at high prices for 4 other venues as well

The Missoula event specifically states that they will not accept tickets from 3rd party sellers, don't know about Portland though. If so, those people that buy those scalper tickets are going to be sorry.

Thanks, I'll let the venues know about this although I'm not sure what they can do at this point. That will be up to each venue to decide.
Understood.. The one thing that may have some effect is posting the note like Missoula did stating, that they will not accept tickets from 3rd party sellers.
That may provide those considering buying from 3rd parties to feel uncomfortable and pass.
