I can only make a quick comment and then I better log off. Trivia for you:
the audiobook version of this story was read by David Cronenberg, who was the director of the movie "The Dead Zone"

I tend to read fast anyway, but yes, this was a quick read.

I think there is one question in your list that we hardly ever get to... was there maturity by the end? and I think this one, there finally was.
Thank-you for mentioning the questions, I agree with you do1you9love. By the end, he did grow and show he was strong. I did not see it coming though.

My absolute favorite lines-
"And he couldn't seem to tell anyone. He knew it would be better if he did, understood that if he poured it into someone else's ear it would change its shape, perhaps even grow a handle with which he could hold it."
I re-read that line twice thinking it was neat the way he had slipped it into the story, making it four dimensional to me.

I appreciated that Tell told Jannings off-he really couldn't do much more than that without any proof. But at least he stood up for the dead man (even if he was a drug dealer) and let it be known that Jannings was scum.

How about this story metaphorically? Could Tell actually have been a drug dealer at one time and felt if he hadn't changed his ways, Paul could have offed him? Or, even more of a far out theory, that Tell saw himself using drugs and having them kill himself and worrying that he would die in a john someday? Just a thought, but a valid one, if people use them in a public placed one would wonder what would happen if they die in the stall, how long until they were discovered and how many flies or critters would accumulate.

So are there any more thoughts or comments on this story before we end for this week?
What did you think of the sexual advance being the initial demise of the Tell/Jannings friendship? It made me think there may have been more to the killing of the drug dealer-maybe there was an encounter or another unwanted advance?

Sorry I dropped out like that. My daughter had a crisis. She is 10 and her stuffed friend did not make it on our weekend trip. :cry_002: Had to go into full Mommy-mode. Found a hand towel, wrapped into a pillow case, and given a name that stuffed friend made up. Lots of back rubbing followed.

Anyway, this was a good story. Love all of your insights as usual. We have plenty of stories in this collection, but I even hope we continue onto other collections after this. Gonna check on my kiddo now. Good night!

I didn't understand why it so upset Tell so, as I understand everyone has a duality in their sexual natures. Men tend to get more offended than women, I think, when other men hit on them.

I think you are right. Paul was shady and I wouldn't doubt there was more to the story.

Quick Thinking Mom.

Thank-you to everyone who participated in the discussion this week. We couldn't do it if you didn't show up. Thank-you to Sai King for marvelous stories to discuss.

Looks like we are done for this week, next week "You Know They've Got a Hell of a Band."
