If you like The Stand you might also try Robert McCammon's "Swan Song" and Brian Hodge's "Dark Advent." Both are pretty good books with similar themes.

Swan Song is awesome and a must-read. Then read Boy's Life - not horror, but great fun just the same. I've not read Dark Advent - but I'll put it on my list for when I finish A Game of Thrones.

Like during the reading of The Dark Tower books, there's much to ponder and consider while reading The Stand. Though it is chunky, reading it is well worth the haul. And I'm hoping (praying) you're reading the complete and uncut version.

Yes, it is the complete version ;) I do have a copy of both but assumed the full version was the best option. I haven't read the DT series yet, am really looking forward to those too!

...as one who has read both versions, and also to reiterate what has been said here before-the "cut" version didn't perturb the flow of the story at all, but with all the original material added back in-it certainly made the word soup even tastier.....

This my favorite book of all time! I've read it at least a half dozen times. Personal fave characters were Tom Cullen and Harold Lauder, but there really isn't a weak character in it.

For those that mentioned Swan Song, I just read that for the first time a couple of months ago. It's easy to see the influence of The Stand on it, from the apocalyptic setting to the supernatural, shape-shifting main villain. It was good, not great. Funny, though, I actually read up a bit on it, and it seems McCammon has made statements showing frustration that it was perceived as a Stand copycat.
